Second Sunday in Lent (Control of Speech)

O God, who unto man alone hast given the power of speech wherewith to praise Thee, grant that our hearts may be so filled with love and wisdom that we may speak evil of no man, but evermore glorify Thy holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

1st March - St David of Wales

Almighty God, who in love towards thy people called thy servant David to be a faithful and wise steward of thy mysteries: mercifully grant that, following his purity of life and zeal for the whole gospel of Christ, we may with him receive thy heavenly reward, through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom with thee and the Holy Ghost be all honour and glory, world without end. Amen.

Today we honor St. Macarius of Egypt, a desert father whose profound humility and asceticism transformed the Christian monastic tradition. Born around 300 AD, he sought solitude in the Scetic desert, where he spent sixty years in rigorous prayer and labor. Renowned for his spiritual wisdom, Macarius emphasized the indwelling of the Holy Spirit and the heart's purification. Despite harsh persecutions and exile by Arians, his gentleness never wavered. He remains a pillar of Hesychasm, teaching that through quietude and constant devotion, a soul becomes a dwelling place for God. His feast day is celebrated on January 19.

Do not be ashamed to enter again into the Church. Be ashamed when you sin. Do not be ashamed when you repent. Pay attention to what the devil did to you. These are two things: sin and repentance. Sin is a wound; repentance is a medicine. Just as there are for the body wounds and medicines, so for the soul are sins and repentance. However, sin has the shame and repentance possesses the courage.

Christ we rise today
Knowing that you alone
Know our hearts.
You alone can change
Our sadness into joy.
Forgive us our shortcomings.
Teach us patience.
Teach us kindness.
Help us to forgive,
Those who have injured us,
And keep us from injuring others.
Keep our way lighted,
With your steadfast love.

Amen.
