Yesterday, I participated in a Prayer Vigil for Immigration Reform that included a demonstration of consciousness raising in front of the Hotel Encanto where Congressman Steve Pearce was holding a jobs fair. Currently serving as an interim pastor with an ELCA church in Las Cruces (Peace Lutheran), I stand with the ELCA and my own denomination the United Church of Christ on the need for comprehensive immigration reform that upholds family unity, respects the God-given dignity of every person and establishes a clear pathway to legal status and citizenship for undocumented immigrants. Our attempt to meet with Congressman Pearce failed. Nonetheless, our culturally diverse, interfaith group reflected together on how to speak truth to power, prayed together from each of our traditions, and the local rabbi and I found the Spanish translation to "We Shall Overcome", singing in solidarity with the current immigrant struggles that reminded me of singing the same song during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. The need for God's justice never stops. I have posted a photo of a young man, Raul, who is an active member of Peace Lutheran Church's Border Servant Corps, whose family is torn apart by current immigration laws and border policies. It was ironic for me to see him holding a quote from Margaret Thatcher. The photo is a snapshot of a few of those gathered at the busy intersection.

I witness nature’s display of grace and wonder, and marvel at the appearance of flowers, the sprouting of new leaves and buds. The beginning manifestations of thought seeds planted earlier have also started to appear. It is spring, the time for planting anew. Though I know it is always the season for the intentional planting, nurturing and harvesting of my personal desires, I take advantage of the universal energy of spring as I lay my seeds into fertile ground. I know and have faith that divine creation flows through the entire life cycle and I allow the process to work fully, resisting the urge of impatience to unearth my seeds and young plants. I revel in the natural evolution. My gratitude replaces any lingering doubt of unworthiness as I observe the unfolding growth. I celebrate this shared and personal manifestation of spring as well as the wonder of earth’s nature. Thank you, God!
