If a demon can "believe" facts about Jesus, then what does saving faith actually look like? How do we know if we are "in love" like The Monkees song, or just terrified like the spirit in Capernaum?

John gives us a challenging litmus test in 1 John 2:3-6:

"And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments... whoever says 'I abide in him' ought to walk in the same way in which he walked."

Knowing Jesus isn't about passing a theology quiz. It's about alignment.

If I say I believe in Him, but my life looks nothing like His—if I am angry, unforgiving, greedy, or selfish—my "belief" is just mental noise. True relational belief always results in wanting to walk like the one you love.

Which aspect of Jesus’ "walk" do you find hardest to imitate today?

We often use the word "believe" to mean "I mentally accept that this fact is true."

But if that’s our definition of faith, Mark 1:21-28 delivers a shock to the system.

Jesus is teaching in the synagogue, and a man with an unclean spirit cries out: "What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God."

Did you catch that? The demon had perfect theology. It "believed" Jesus was the Holy One of God. It had zero doubt in its mind.

But was it saved? No. It was terrified.

Here is the hard truth: You can believe the right facts about Jesus and still be completely opposed to Him. The demon had belief, but it had no relationship.

True belief must move beyond the brain and into the heart.

"I thought love was only true in fairy tales / Meant for someone else but not for me... Then I saw her face, now I’m a believer!"

The Monkees hit on something profound in that classic song. There is a kind of cynicism that vanishes the moment you truly encounter love. It’s an instantaneous shift from skepticism to total commitment. "Not a trace of doubt in my mind. I'm in love."

This week, we’re exploring what it means to be a "believer" in Jesus. Is it just checking a box on a spiritual survey? Or is it, like the song suggests, an encounter that leads to being "in love"?

We are going to look at Mark 1, 1 John, and John 15 to discover that biblical belief isn't just about facts; it’s about relationship.

We arrive at Day 3. We have read, and we have reflected.

John 1:9 says, "The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world."

The end goal of Lectio Divina isn't just to feel peaceful; it’s to be transformed so that we can participate in what God is doing. The Word became flesh to bring Light to dark places.

If we have truly encountered the Light over the last two days, we cannot help but reflect it.

THE PRACTICE: Contemplatio is often defined as "resting in God." Take a moment to just rest in the truth that the Light has overcome the darkness. You don't have to fight for the victory; Jesus already won it.

Now, as you step into your day, ask: How does the word I meditated on yesterday change how I treat the next person I see?

If your word was "Life," how do you bring life to a draining conversation today? If it was "Light," how do you illuminate a shadowed corner of your community?

Welcome back to Day 2 of our journey through John 1. Yesterday, we read the text and let a specific word or phrase find us. (If you missed it, check the previous post!).

Today, we move into Meditatio (Reflection) and Oratio (Prayer).

THE PRACTICE: Take the word that stood out to you yesterday. Hold it in your mind. "Chew" on it.

Ask the Holy Spirit: Why did this word grab me right now? Is it a comfort? A challenge? An invitation?

Don't rush to an answer. Just sit with the question.

Then, turn that reflection into a very simple prayer back to God.

Welcome to a three-day journey into the prologue of John. Over the next few days, we are going to practice Lectio Divina together—a slow, contemplative way of reading scripture not for information, but for formation.

Today, we simply read.

THE PRACTICE: Read the passage below slowly, perhaps out loud. Don’t analyze it. Don't try to figure out the deep theology just yet. Just listen.

Pay attention to the "shimmer." What single word or short phrase jumps off the screen at you? What tugs at your heart?

John 1:1-5, 9 (NIV) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. ... The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.
