We'll be continuing on in our series in Mark's Gospel, looking at Mark 12:13-17 when the religious leaders tried to trick Jesus by asking Him a question about paying taxes. If not already committed to serving with a local church, join us tomorrow as we continue on in our series in Mark's Gospel, after a week break last week for our backpack giveaway. We'll start in Mark 12:1-12 as we look at Jesus condemning the wicked Jewish religious leaders, and they know it. Our sermon title is Treacherous Tenants: A Prosecutorial Parable

In the movie Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, the main villain, dressed in disguise, is sitting in a hallway when the good children are trying to escape. He asks them, "Do you have a hall pass?" This is a play on words from school days when teachers would challenge the authority of students found in the halls. The pass would serve as a statement of authority giving children permission to be out of class. As we continue on in our series in Mark, we find ourselves at the end of chapter 11, verses 27-33. The wicked rulers over the Temple were challenging the authority of Jesus. Our Sermon title tomorrow is Do You Have A Hall Pass. Hey folks, grab onto your socks, as you are about to read something awesome that God has provided for us through our amazing community. There are all sorts of posts out here about everything that is bad about Las Animas. Well not this post! I shared last week that we lost out on the grant that we used in the past to fill up the 75 backpacks that we give away every school year. So, the youth from our church, using their own pocket money to buy the supplies, hosted a community car wash and lemonade stand last Friday. They brought in $1,174 ($500 of that from one car). Today I put in our Amazon order for all the bulk supplies. Buying the same supplies that we bought last year while increasing some of the numbers and finding some better bulk deals, my cart total was $1,174.78!!!
We'll be hosting our Annual Back-to-School Backpack Giveaway on Sunday, August 16th, during our regularly scheduled church service which starts at 11 am. We will be praying over the students during the service. There will be a lunch provided afterwards. We'll have 40 backpacks that have some of the supplies on the Las Animas School District Elementary School supply list, and 35 backpacks with the Middle & High school supply lists. Tomorrow's sermon title might be the same from last week, The Tree That Craved To Be...Cursed (part 2), but it isn't rinse and repeat. Last week, we looked at the physical fig tree that Jesus cursed, but tomorrow we'll look at the what the tree was pointing to when we see Jesus cleanse the Temple in Mark 11:15-19. The youth from our church will be hosting a carwash/lemonade fundraiser this Friday 12-4 pm, on our church property. They are trying to raise $1500, which is what it costs us to fill the 75 backpacks for our annual back-to-school backpack giveaway. In the past, we received a grant to fill the backpacks, this year we didn't. When I informed our folks that we didn't get the grant, our students came up with their own idea. So our students, some of who have received backpacks in the past, want to make sure that students who need a backpack full of supplies get one.
