Robert Murray M'Cheyne on suffering:

"It brings out graces that cannot be seen in a time of health. It is the treading of the grapes that brings out the sweet juices of the vine; so it is affliction that draws forth submission, weanedness from the world, and complete rest in God. Use afflictions while you have them."

There are countless pieces of information that enter your life daily, and each one has an opportunity to consume your mind and heart.

But brothers and sisters...whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Paul's counsel to the Philippians is as relevant for us today as it was for them 2,000 years ago.

Think Right.

Christian Liberty ≠ Christian Unity

Christian Liberty + Christian Maturity = Christian Unity

Basic Logic does not make this equation work; Biblical Love does.

"It's Your Nutrition, Bro"

I recently heard a conversation where a man was seeking advice about how to more quickly "get in shape."

He expressed disappointment in the fact he goes to the gym two or three times a week but doesn't really notice any changes.

His friend did not hesitate to reply, "What are you eating?"

Upon hearing the answer his friend replied again, "It's your nutrition, bro. You have to feed your body, not just eat."

Going to the gym is good--but going to the gym AND eating well is best.

It is the same with going to church two or three times a week, but seeing nothing really change in your spiritual life.

During the week, don't just consume content; feed your mind and soul with truth from God's Word.

Go to church AND eat well.

We should not resist change because we don't want to be wrong.

We should embrace change if it means getting it right.

"If Christians were content with doing justly and loving mercy, and would cease walking humbly with God, they might go through the world, not only in peace, but with applause; but he that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution."

The still small voice of the LORD drowns out the noise of this world.

Dear pastor,

You know this already; I'm just writing to remind you that no matter how badly you may desire it, the truth is:

You can't please everyone.
You can't meet with everyone.
You can't take everyone's call.
You can't quickly respond or reply to everyone.
You can't solve every family's problem.
You can't restore marriages.
You can't reconcile prodigals and parents.
You can't heal hurts.
You can't mend hearts.
You can't adequately express to everyone how strongly you desire them to prosper spiritually, physically, emotionally, mentally, and financially.
You can't convince everyone that Jesus is really who he says he is AND that he can and will do what he says.
You can't plan a sermon well enough to meet the needs of everyone.
You can't be the perfect counselor you think you have to be for everyone.
And you can't put into words the gratitude you have to be their pastor.

But you can pray for everyone.
You can pray, and you can pray again.

Your prayer for them may be more valuable than your time with them.

We can't effectively pastor anyone without the Lord's help--may our prayer lives reflect we believe that.
