Pastor Rebekah bring the message from James 5. We learned that the problem he is addressing wasn’t just about money, it was those acted like they created it all themselves.
They hoarded, they withheld wages, they lived as if the fields, the workers, the harvest, and the wealth were solely theirs to control.
That’s the quiet lie underneath the “self-made” story: that what we have is purely the result of our own hands, our own hustle, our own intelligence.
Scripture keeps pushing back on that. The ability to work, the opportunity, the strength, the mind, the timing, the open door — none of it originates with us.
James doesn’t just warn the rich about how they spend or hoard. He exposes the deeper posture of forgetting the Source. When we forget that everything we attain still comes from God, luxury starts to feel earned instead of entrusted, and other people become obstacles or tools instead of image-bearers.
No one is self-made. We’re stewards. And the moment we start believing otherwise is usually the moment the corrosion begins.
