Knights of Columbus: Msgr Stanley Mathews Council #3536 Being a Knight is more than camaraderie; it is being involved with your community; it is supporting your local Catholic Church.

About the Knights of Columbus

Thanks to the efforts of Father Michael J. McGivney, assistant pastor of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven and some of his parishioners, the Connecticut state legislature on March 29, 1882, officially chartered the Knights of Columbus as a fraternal benefit society. The Order is still true to its founding principles of charity, unity and fraternity. The Knights was form

ed to render financial aid to members and their families. Mutual aid and assistance are offered to sick, disabled and needy members and their families. Social and intellectual fellowship is promoted among members and their families through educational, charitable, religious, social welfare, war relief and public relief works. The history of the Order shows how the foresight of Father Michael J. McGivney, whose cause for sainthood is being investigated by the Vatican, brought about what has become the world's foremost Catholic fraternal benefit society. The Order has helped families obtain economic security and stability through its life insurance, annuity and long-term care programs, and has contributed time and energy worldwide to service in communities. The Knights of Columbus has grown from several members in one council to more than 15,100 councils and 1.9 million members throughout the United States, Canada, the Philippines, Mexico, Poland, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Panama, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, Cuba, Guatemala, Guam, Saipan, Lithuania, Ukraine, and South Korea.

Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Friends:

The Gospel passage from Luke (Lk 9:51-62) this Sunday shows Jesus making it clear that God has to come first in our lives—if we want to be true disciples. For example:

And another said, "I will follow you, Lord,
but first let me say farewell to my family at home."
To him Jesus said, "No one who sets a hand to the plow
and looks to what was left behind is fit for the kingdom of God." Lk 9:61-62

That sounds cruel. Yet we know that Jesus is the opposite of cruel—he is kind and gentle.

Look at it this way. Everyone who has ever been on an airplane and listened to the instructions of the flight attendants knows that when the oxygen masks are released, we are supposed to put ours on first and then on the children and whoever else needs help. This is because we have to be breathing in order to help those who need it.

It is the same way with God. We need to be right with God first before we can teach our children about the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We have to be breathing that spiritual oxygen if we want to love God and pass His infinite love and mercy on to others.
