Sometimes the simplest acts of service can open the door to meaningful connections. At this year’s Berrien County Youth Fair, volunteers from three area Adventist churches created “The Resting Place”—an oasis offering water, health resources, activities, prayer, and a friendly place to pause. God places us in someone’s path at exactly the moment they need hope. During Michigan Youth Rush, Yuridia met a woman grieving the loss of her grandmother, the one person who had talked with her about Jesus. Through a book, a prayer, and a simple hug, Yuridia was reminded that people are searching for answers and longing to know the truth about God. The experience left her eager to keep going and share more of Jesus with others.

Adventist education is about more than preparing students for the next grade, college, or a future career. It is a ministry focused on preparing young people for eternity. At this year’s Michigan Conference Teachers Convention, educators gathered at Camp Au Sable to be equipped, encouraged, and reminded of the sacred calling they carry into their classrooms each day.

First came the money: pandemic-era federal funding flooded American schools with hardware, platforms, and connectivity on a scale nobody had planned for. Now the pendulum has swung hard the other direction. Some schools have gone as far as running month-long fasts from technology entirely — while, in the same breath, research publications celebrate AI tools that help students with reading and math.

Both extremes are overcompensation. And the child in the middle is the one who pays. That then becomes, an ethical issue.

The Michigan Conference of Seventh-day Adventists is pleased to announce the Executive Committee appointment of Gabrielle Umaña-Santacruz as associate director for the Public Campus Ministries Department. Gabrielle brings firsthand experience in public campus ministry, student leadership, missionary training, and discipleship to this new role.

As a student, Gabrielle became involved with public campus ministry while attending the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor. She served in several leadership roles with Adventist student organizations on campus, including as president of Adventist Christian Fellowship, the official Adventist student organization on campus and as a student missionary in the CAMPUS Missionary Training Program (MTP) at Michigan State University.

Gabrielle has served as a Public Campus Ministries Fellow, helping support the launch of the Scholars Program at Michigan State University and the University of Michigan. The Scholars Program gives university students the opportunity to take religion courses through CAMPUS each semester, exploring a focused area of study from a biblical perspective. She has worked alongside students at different stages of their spiritual journeys, helping create opportunities for discipleship, evangelism, and Christian community.

In her new role, Gabrielle will serve as the new Missionary Training Program Director where she will help equip young people to deepen their relationship with Christ, share their faith, and serve as missionaries on university campuses across Michigan and beyond.

Sometimes God can even use lost keys to open a door for the gospel. During Michigan Youth Rush, Savana prayed that God would do something amazing through her one day. An unexpected encounter in a parking lot, a specific prayer, and a set of missing keys became a powerful lesson in answered prayer and how God can use the simplest circumstances to lead someone closer to Him.

What began five years ago in the back room of a home has grown into a permanent center for whole-person care. Family & Lifestyle Medicine recently celebrated the grand opening of its new Holt clinic, marking a journey filled with unexpected connections, generous support, and doors that God continued to open along the way.
