Today the good tidings of joy are proclaimed,
today is the festival of the Virgin;
things below are joined together with things on high.
Adam is made new;
Eve is freed from the primal grief;
and by the deification of the human nature that the Lord assumed,
the tabernacle of our substance has become a temple of God.
Oh, what a mystery!
The manner of His emptying cannot be known;
the manner of His conception is beyond speech.
An angel ministers at the miracle; a virginal womb receives the Son;
the Holy Spirit is sent down; the Father on high is well pleased,
and according to their common counsel, a reconciliation is brought to pass
in which and through which we are saved.
For this reason let us unite our song with Gabriel’s,
crying aloud to the Virgin:
“Rejoice, O Lady Full of Grace, the Lord is with thee!
From thee comes our salvation, which is Christ our God,
for, by assuming our nature, He has led us back to Himself.
Humbly pray to Him for the salvation of our souls!”
-From Great Compline for Annunciation (translation from oca.org)

Thou hast shone forth to tax collectors and sinners
because of Thine abundant mercies.
Where should Thy light shine but on those who sit in darkness?
O our Savior, glory to Thee!

This past Sunday was the commemoration of the Prophet Elijah. In honor of his ascent in a fiery chariot, a practice has arisen of blessing vehicles on his feast day. May the Lord preserve us all in our travels. We can also recall the chariot imagery used in the Lenten Triodion:

"Like Elijah the Tishbite let us fashion for ourselves from day to day, O brethren, a fiery chariot from the four great virtues; let us exalt our minds through freedom from the passions; let us arm our flesh with purity and our hands with acts of compassion; let us make our feet beautiful with the preaching of the Gospel; and let us put the enemy to flight and gain the victory."
(From Vespers on the First Sunday of Lent. The "four great virtues" are what are also known as the "cardinal virtues": courage, prudence, justice, and temperance.)

Coming down to those on earth, the Holy Spirit's spring was seen in the form of fiery streams apportioned spiritually to all, as it bedewed and enlightened the Lord's Apostles. And thus, the fire became a cloud bedewing them, filling them with light, and raining flames on them. And through them, grace has been vouchsafed us by fire and water in very truth. Behold, the Comforter's light is come and hath illumined the whole world.
-Sessional hymn at Pentecost Matins

O ye children of the Church, whose likeness is like unto light,
Receive ye the fire-breathing dew of the Spirit,
Which is a redeeming purification of offenses;
For now hath the Law gone forth from Sion,
Even the Spirit's grace, in the form of tongues of fire.
-2nd Canon of Pentecost, Ode 5, Irmos

The enhypostatic Wisdom of the most high Father, God's pre-eternal Word who is beyond all being, who was united with us in His love for mankind and lived among us, has now revealed through His actions a cause for celebration even more distinctly superior than Easter's excellence. For we now celebrate the transition of our nature in Him, not just from the subterranean regions up on to the earth, but from the earth to the heaven of heavens, and to the throne above the heavens of Him who rules over all.
-St. Gregory Palamas, First Homily on Ascension (tr. Christopher Veniamin)

Palms and branches laid out for Christ's triumphal entry into Jerusalem. These symbols of triumph remain with us as we journey through this week to the Cross and Resurrection.

The Cross adorned with flowers for veneration on the third Sunday of Lent.

"Wishing to restore all men to life,
Thou didst accept crucifixion, O Christ our God.
Burning with boundless love for man,
Thou didst take the quill of the Cross in Thy hand;
dipping it in ink of royal crimson,
Thou didst sign our release with blood-stained fingers.
Though temptations assault us,
may we never forsake Thee again!
Have mercy on Thy despairing people,
O long-suffering Master!
Arise and fight Thine enemies in Thine almighty power!"

At the first Presanctified Liturgy of Lent this year (served this morning), we sang this hymn:

While fasting in body, O brethren,
let us also fast in spirit!
Let us loose the bonds of iniquity!
Let us undo the chains of injustice!
Let us break the yoke of oppression!
Let us give food to the hungry!
Let us shelter the poor and homeless,
so that we may receive great mercy from Christ our God!

It's closely based on Isaiah 58:6-8, and a powerful reminder that fasting is about more than a change of diet. The text of the Presanctified Liturgy itself gives another powerful summary of non-dietary aspects of fasting:

O God, great and praiseworthy, who by the life-creating death of thy Christ, hast translated us from corruption to incorruption, do thou free all our senses from deadly passions, set over them as a good guide the understanding that is within us. And let our eyes abstain from every evil sight, our hearing be inaccessible to idle words, and our tongues be purged of unseemly speech. Make clean our lips which praise thee, O Lord; make our hands refrain from base deeds, and to work only that which is well-pleasing to thee, fortifying our members and minds by thy grace.

May God grant us such a fast!

Image: the Prophet Isaiah with the Mother of God. Mt. Sinai, 13th c. There are daily readings from Isaiah throughout the weekdatys of Lent. Besides the first hymn's obvious drawing on his prophecy, the cleansing of lips in the second prayer could be taken as an echo of Isaiah ch. 6.
