You cannot repent on your own. God has to repent you. In other words, God must bring you to repentance. He works repentance in you.
You cannot have faith (trust) in God on your own. God has to create faith in you. God the Holy Spirit does so by His Word.
His preached Word, His written Word, and the visible Word—Baptism. The Lord’s Supper, too, is God’s visible Word whereby He sustains the gift of faith (trust) that He created in you.
You get zero credit for repentance.
You get zero credit for faith.
Repentance is not 99% God and 1% you.
Saving faith is not mere mental assent to the facts.
Saving faith is not reflective faith, where you simply think deeply about the facts of the faith.
Saving faith is a gift God delivers to you whereby you lay hold of His promises; His promise to forgive sins and to sustain your trust in Him.
Salvation is God’s work alone. A salvation He delivers through physical means, through men called by the Church to preach the Word and administer the Sacraments.
