Thoughts for Thursday, from Pastor Sue:

While a little long, please consider this poem written by Amanda Gorman:

“May this be the day

We come together.

Mourning, we come to mend,

Withered, we come to weather,

Torn, we come to tend,

Battered, we come to better.

Tethered by this year of yearning,

We are learning

That thought we weren’t ready for this,

We have been readied by it.

We steadily vow that no matter

How we are weighed down,

We must always pave a way forward.

This hope is our door, our portal.

Even if we never get back to normal,

Someday we can venture beyond it,

To leave the known and take the first steps.

So let us not return to what was normal,

But reach toward what is next.

What was cursed, we will cure.

What was plagued, we will prove pure.

Where we tend to argue, we will try to agree,

Those fortunes we forswore, now the future we foresee,

Where we weren’t aware, we’re now awake,

Those moments we missed

Are now these moments we make,

The moments we meet,

And our hearts, once all together beaten,

Now altogether beat.

Come, look up with kindness yet,

For even solace can be sourced from sorrow.

We remember, not just for the sake of yesterday,

But to take on tomorrow.

We heed this old spirit,

In a new day’s lyric,

In our hearts, we hear it:

For auld lang syne, my dear,

For auld lang syne.

Be bold, sang Time this year,

Be bold, sang Time,

For when you honor yesterday,

Tomorrow ye will find.

Know what we’ve fought

Need not be forgot nor for none.

It defines us, binds us as one,

Come over, join this day just begun.

For wherever we come together,

We will forever overcome.”

Prayer: Thank you God, for poets that make us think. Amen.

Did you know that the original chapel at Bethel Hill served as a makeshift hospital during the American Revolution, when General Washington's troops were retreating down Skippack Pike after the battle of Germantown. The footprint of where it stood is now marked by the garden columbarium for the burial of ashes, surrounded by centuries old gravesites, including one in the corner of the unknown soldiers who lost their lives during the America Revolution.

On this Memorial Day, we pray: Thank you, God, for those who served and lost their lives. Be with their families as they grieve their loss, no matter how long ago. Thank you for Jesus who died to set us free. Amen.

Thoughts for Thursday, from Pastor Sue:
From 𝘽𝙚𝙘𝙖𝙪𝙨𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙅𝙚𝙨𝙪𝙨, DaySpring 2018, excerpts from pg. 168-170
Ephesians 2:5, 8-9, KJV - ⁵ Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved) ⁸ For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: ⁹Not of works, lest any man should boast.

“The sky may be gray today, but you are saved; someone may have hurt you or let you down, but you are saved; you may be going through a difficult time, but you are saved; the enemy may be attacking you with doubts and fears, but you are saved; you may be tired, alone, or unappreciated, but you are saved. “What we suffer now is nothing,” the apostle Paul wrote, “compared to the glory He will give us later.” (Romans 8:18, NLT) Today you have not only been saved by Him, but you are also being kept by Him, and He will bring you safely home. What could be better than that?”

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for saving me. Thank you that you are with me no matter what I’m going through. I trust you. Amen.
