This year at Vacation Bible School, children will discover the incredible gift of being “Restored in Christ.” Throughout the week, we will explore how God, in His love and mercy, restores us—not by anything we do, but through His saving work in Jesus.

The central focus of our learning will be Holy Baptism. We will learn that Baptism is not just plain water, but water combined with God’s Word, as Jesus says in Matthew 28:19, calling us to baptize in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

In Fall 2021, The Lutheran Foundation commissioned the composition of an original hymn that would speak to mental health. Several hymn lyricists submitted texts, and a small committee reviewed the submissions and selected a hymn text written by Rev. Dr. Wilfred Karsten, Pastor of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Moline IL. The title of the hymn he composed is “Father of Body, Mind and Spirit.”

In the conversation we had with Rev. Karsten prior to him composing the text, we emphasized that, in the church, we comfortably talk about our spiritual health, and we are usually comfortable talking about and praying for our physical health. However, there is often stigma or silence in the church related to our mental health. Nevertheless, God has created us with spirit, body, and mind. Recognizing our mental and emotional senses, Rev. Karsten references in his hymn such words and phrases as, “make ev’ry anxious worry flee,” “spare me from hopelessly despairing,” and “calm my emotions, hear my plea.”

Additionally, an original tune was composed for this hymn by Matthew Machemer, Associate Kantor at Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne. Kantor Machemer’s musical arrangement reflects a calming presence and bold confession of the words we sing. The last three measures add a strong exclamation point to the truth of God’s promised peace that He provides to His people.

O Father of mercies and God of all comfort, our only help in time of need: We humbly ask that you behold,
visit, and relieve those who suffer from depression, anxiety, schizophrenia and other mental illnesses. Look
upon them with the eyes of your mercy; comfort them with a sense of your goodness; preserve them from the
temptations of the enemy; and give them patience under affliction. In your good time, restore them to health,
and enable them to lead the rest of their life in reverence of you, and to your glory. In the name of Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.

That's why we developed https://lookupindiana.org/, a comprehensive online resource that includes information, support and providers for anyone wanting to find help, locate information, or help others on their path to mental wellness.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Too often, those living with mental illness suffer silently and in the shadows. The stigma surrounding mental health struggles can feel isolating and discouraging, preventing people from reaching out for the help, support, and encouragement they need from friends, family, and their community.
It’s time to silence the stigma by learning more, listening well, and speaking openly about mental health with compassion and understanding.
At St. John’s, we want you to know this: Jesus cares about your whole-person well-being — body, mind, and soul — and so do we. You are not alone. St. John’s Lutheran Church and School strive to be a safe place where people can talk honestly about mental health, receive support, and be cared for with Christ-centered love and compassion.

Join us tomorrow, May 13 at 6:00 pm., as we celebrate the dedication of the new Reading Garden at St. John's Lutheran School.
This beautiful space has been thoughtfully transformed into an outdoor classroom where students can read, learn, reflect, and grow in God’s creation. The garden features a Little Free Library, benches, flowers, a mosaic art installation, and a statue of Jesus welcoming the little children.
Through the generosity and memorial gifts given by the family and friends of six young members of our community, this once-unused area has become a place of peace, remembrance, and learning for future generations of students.
We invite our church, school, and community families to come and witness the repurposing and dedication of this meaningful space. May it be a blessing to all who gather there for years to come. See less
