The Seven Sundays of St. Joseph is a traditional Catholic devotion of contemplating the seven sorrows and seven joys in the life of Saint Joseph over the seven Sundays preceding his feast day on March 19th.
The devotion originated from a story where St. Joseph appeared to two shipwrecked Franciscan monks and asked them to honor his seven sorrows and joys. Observing the devotion is a way to seek special graces and powerful intercession from St. Joseph for specific intentions. The practice involves receiving Holy Communion on seven consecutive Sundays and reciting prayers and meditations specific to each sorrow and joy.
The seven sorrows and joys meditated upon each Sunday are:
• 1st Sunday: Sorrow: Joseph's doubt about Mary's pregnancy (Matthew 1:19). Joy: The angel's message to him (Matthew 1:20).
• 2nd Sunday: Sorrow: The poverty of Jesus' birth (Luke 2:7). Joy: The birth of the Savior (Luke 2:10-11).
• 3rd Sunday: Sorrow: The Circumcision and shedding of Jesus' blood (Luke 2:21). Joy: Giving the holy name of Jesus (Matthew 1:25).
• 4th Sunday: Sorrow: Simeon's prophecy of suffering for Jesus and Mary (Luke 2:34). Joy: The foretelling of the redemption and salvation of many souls (Luke 2:38).
• 5th Sunday: Sorrow: The flight into Egypt to escape Herod (Matthew 2:14). Joy: Having Jesus and Mary always near and seeing the idols of Egypt fall (Isaiah 19:1).
• 6th Sunday: Sorrow: The return from Egypt and fear of King Archelaus (Matthew 2:22). Joy: Dwelling safely with Jesus and Mary in Nazareth (Luke 2:39).
• 7th Sunday: Sorrow: The loss of the Child Jesus for three days (Luke 2:45). Joy: Finding Jesus in the temple among the doctors (Luke 2:46).
Specific prayers, such as the Litany of St. Joseph, often accompany the meditations. This devotion can be practiced at any time of the year, but it is typically observed in the seven weeks leading up to March 19th.
