As we continue in James chapter 3 this week, James gives us a beautiful picture of what God’s wisdom looks like when it takes root in our life.

He says it is
“first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.”

This is not just a list of virtues, it is a picture of Jesus Himself.

Heavenly wisdom doesn’t just change how you think.

It changes who you are and how you treat people.

Heavenly Wisdom Reflects God’s Character

James says wisdom from above is:

Pure - It has no hidden agenda.
Peaceable - It seeks unity, not drama.
Gentle - It is not harsh, or abrasive.
Open to reason - It listens. It is teachable.
Full of mercy - It forgives quickly.
Full of good fruits - It produces visible righteousness.
Impartial - It doesn’t play favorites.
Sincere - It is honest, and authentic.

This is what God’s wisdom looks like when it is lived out.

It looks like Jesus formed in us.

Heavenly wisdom makes you more like Jesus.

Heavenly Wisdom Builds Peace and Righteousness.

James ends with a powerful image:
“A harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.”

Heavenly wisdom doesn’t just avoid conflict, it plants peace.

It plants peace in marriages.
It plants peace in friendships.
It plants peace in churches.

And wherever peace is planted, righteousness grows.

You cannot sow chaos and reap holiness.
You cannot sow anger and reap unity.
You cannot sow pride and reap spiritual fruit.

Which Wisdom Is Shaping Your Life?

James gives us two paths:

Earthly wisdom - jealous, selfish, chaotic, destructive

Heavenly wisdom - pure, peaceable, gentle, fruitful

One leads to disorder.

The other leads to a harvest of righteousness.

The question is not whether you are following wisdom?

The question is which wisdom is forming your life?

As we continue in James this week, he teaches us how something so small can have such an impact on ours and others lives.

James 3:5-6
So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! 6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell.

The tongue reveals the heart, and the heart reveals our need for a Savior.

Jesus never sinned with His words.

He spoke truth perfectly.
He spoke grace consistently.
He spoke life continually.

And on the cross, He spoke the greatest words ever uttered: “Father, forgive them.”

Through His death and resurrection, He offers us a new heart, and a new heart produces new speech.

James calls us to take our words seriously.

The tongue is small, but its impact is enormous.

It can direct.
It can destroy.
It can reveal.

But in the hands of the Holy Spirit, the tongue can become an instrument of blessing, healing, and life.

May God give us hearts transformed by Christ and tongues controlled by His Spirit.

As we continue through James 2, James confronts us with three unmistakable realities about genuine faith in the life of a believer.

First, faith becomes visible only when it moves, because belief that stays hidden in the heart remains unseen until it expresses itself through obedience, compassion, and a transformed life.

Second, even demons believe, but they do not obey, they possess accurate theology, they acknowledge God’s reality, they tremble at His power, yet they refuse His authority. That kind of belief is not saving faith; it is the faith of demons.

Third, faith without works is lifeless, James calls it barren, empty, dead, like a body without breath or a confession with no pulse.

Real faith is never static or silent; it acts, it loves, it obeys, it lives.

And if faith becomes visible only when it moves, then every believer must ask:

Where is God calling me to act?

Obedience is not about perfection, it is about direction. It is choosing God’s way over our own, even when it stretches us, costs us, or challenges our comfort.

James invites us to stand before the mirror of God’s Word, a mirror that reveals us exactly as we are.

Is there evidence of transformation?

Is there growth in obedience, love, humility, and holiness?

Not perfection, but progress. Not flawless fruit, but living fruit.
