Doris, our point-person at Tec Centro, delivers remaining computers.

On Monday afternoon, Doris delivered the remaining computers from Tec Centro/Stevens College of Technology to the Alpha and Omega Community Center.

I had shared her story earlier. Back in February, Doris was looking for an opportunity to volunteer and contacted our team member Stu Metzler, who Is the Volunteer Manager at Water Street Mission. Stu directed her to Computers for Refugees at the Alpha and Omega Community Center. Interestingly, that week, we had the big snowstorm, and I was working from home. She contacted Pastor Joel, and he gave her my email, which I received and intended to answer.
When I didn't reply, she contacted Pastor Joel again, and he called me. First thing the next morning, I called Doris.

As we got acquainted, she shared that she was studying computers at Tec Centro. Wow! I suggested she talk with her instructors Tim and Matt and get involved with working on the donated computers at Tec Centro. Indeed, she became the point person there just as Josh Rubio did at Stevens.

Doris will graduate from the Tec Centro computer program at the end of June, but she is interested in continuing to be a CFR volunteer. Thanks, Doris! We welcome your continued involvement.

Tec Centro and Stevens College of Technology will have a summer break before resuming classes in August. A key part of their program starting this fall is to have their students get hands on experience by working on our computers. With this new opportunity, we are seeking donations of laptops. We welcome donations from individuals as well as business and corporate entities..

Tec Centro partners with Computers for Refugees

Good morning!

I have written about the relationship that Computers for Refugees has with Stevens College of Technology, and how their students are working on our donated computers to get them ready for our recipient families.

That relationship also extends to Tec Centro, which works in partnership with the Spanish American Civic Association to provide occupational training, English language education, and workforce readiness programs. Matt and Tom, IT instructors at Stevens, also teach at Tec Centro.

This morning, I stopped in at Tec Centro, located on Laurel Street, a few blocks from Alpha and Omega to pick up a part from Doris, one of the IT students. I also saw Matt. Interestingly, Matt's class was devoting their morning to working on our computers. Matt introduced me to his students.

This is a win-win relationship. The Tec Centro students are getting hands-on computer experience. Computers for Refugees is receiving the fruit of their labor as we then provide the finished computers to our recipient families, mainly from the Migrant Education Program.

The Tec Centro students have classes until the end of June and then resume at the August, as will the Stevens students

In the meantime, Computers for Refugees eagerly welcome donations of laptops and All-in-one desktops.

An encouraging Saturday at the Alpha and Omega Community Center.

Despite a rainy Saturday morning at the Alpha and Omega Community Center, today has quite encouraging.

When I first arrived, the rain had not yet started, and I checked out our Community Garden. At the beginning of the week, I planted one cherry tomato plant and a Roma tomato plant. I had gotten them at Second Chance Plants over at Harrisburg Ave and Dillerville Rd. I had also put down squares of cardboard for w**d control. Besides, the cardboard is biodegradable. The best news is that I noticed a yellow blossom on one plant.

Yesterday, we had received a computer donation from our special friend Antonio Rivera Suarez . Actually, the computer had been given out before, and the recipient had gotten a new computer and gave it back to Antonio to be used again. Interestingly, I had never considered myself a techie even though I eagerly use technology for teaching English with my students. Nonetheless, I have been learning, and our senior technicians Charlie and David have been patient in encouraging me to do more. Although we don't specifically ask for desktops, we accepted this one from Antonio because we still have 14 families on our Waiting List. We readily accept laptops and All-in-one desktops.
Everything went well as I installed the Linux Mint operating system on the Dell desktop. We had keyboard, mouse, we**am, and speakers (if we don't have, we need to purchase the accessories).

As I finished up the desktop, my student Sol Maria arrived for her tutoring session at 10am. Interestingly, she is the mother of Melissa, whom I have written about in the past. Sol Maria is originally from the Dominican Republic and quite diligent. Her goal is to prepare for the US Citizenship interview. To show how motivated Sol Maria is, I had received a Whatsapp message several weeks ago in the evening. She asked if I had additional vocabulary to send her. I said, "Give me a minute, and I'll send more vocabulary to study". That's my kind of student - asking for more homework.
Today, we were going over vocabulary for the US Citizenship test.

Well, it's early afternoon, and my day at the Alpha and Omega Community Center is almost finished. The rain is finished and our tomato plants are well-watered.

An encouraging day! Blessings for your day as well.
