We hear people say that they are praying for peace or racial justice, and then we see them go on to do none of the practical work needed to accomplish those things. Worse yet, some use their prayers as a shield while striking out against those who really are doing the hands on work.

We hear others say that prayers will do nothing, that they serve only to make the one who prays more comfortable in their inaction.

The truth at the convergence of these points is that your prayers must be for the wisdom, strength, and courage to be the hands of Christ in this world. To do Justice, now.

If your prayer only serves to make YOU feel good, know that it has not brought good news to the poor and hurting of this world. If you pray for your own comfort, pray for the comfort that heals and rejuvenates, that you might go out and continue the work.

During this time of disruption, many are separated from the coping mechanisms (healthy or otherwise) that usually get them through the day. Many have days that just got a lot harder. Professional mental health services are still available and can be a crucial piece of support.

It is easy to glibly say, just reach out, don't hesitate to call, but for many this is the biggest step in getting the treatment they need. To all God's children, we pray for strength to carry your burdens, strength to assist others with theirs, and strength to ask for help, that your burdens might be eased.

Our programs serve children, adolescents, adults, families, seniors, couples, and members from plain communities throughout the Central Pennsylvania region.

Pandemic

What if you thought of it
as the Jews consider the Sabbath—
the most sacred of times?
Cease from travel.
Cease from buying and selling.
Give up, just for now,
on trying to make the world
different than it is.
Sing. Pray. Touch only those
to whom you commit your life.
Center down.
And when your body has become still, reach out with your heart.
Know that we are connected
in ways that are terrifying and beautiful. (You could hardly deny it now.)
Know that our lives
are in one another’s hands.
(Surely, that has come clear.)
Do not reach out your hands.
Reach out your heart.
Reach out your words.
Reach out all the tendrils
of compassion that move, invisibly, where we cannot touch.
Promise this world your love--
for better or for worse,
in sickness and in health,
so long as we all shall live.

This Sunday we will not be meeting at Crispus Attucks, but join us the following Sunday (December 22nd) for holiday cheer and Graham's last scheduled sermon before his retirement!
After this Graham will be taking a well earned break, and we as a church will go into winter hibernation until the end of February/beginning of March. Updates to follow as God uses this time of discernment to make clear our next steps.

This Sunday we mourned with the children and parents who have been torn asunder as they sought asylum in our country. As complex as it may be, followers of the Messiah seek to do justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with our God.

While every Sunday is a meaningful time of fellowship, this Sunday is special due to the post-service Fellowship Meal! Bring something to share or just bring yourself!

We've been talking in more detail about faith these last few Sundays. While it is easy for others to dismiss belief in the unseen and immaterial as fancy, remember, it is not blindly that we trust. Our faith is born out of relationship with God, the Body of believers, and the natural world that persistently shouts the glory of it's creator.
