Ecclesiastes 3:11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. He also set eternity in the human heart, yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end. Our world is often filled with darkness that causes us to see the ugly in our world and ourselves. So we bow to this god that tells us that we never will be beautiful. But God see's differently. He not only sees the potential in us and everyone around us, he also creates in us beautiful things. Look around and see the beautiful sunset, the magnificence of a mountain, the beauty of a waterfall. I think he has created all these beautiful things so we know and understand how he feels about us, that he loves us. After all he set eternity in our hearts and that is where we find our beauty. So take time to see beauty around you today and ask how does that beauty point you to God?

A long time ago I traveled to a city to live and work for a year to gain insight to people. The group I was with ministered among people who were set aside by most of the present day culture. I met and got to know people that we only ever talk about, people that were cornered off so that most people would not have to see or interact with them. What I discovered is that these outcasts had dreams, had hopes, they were someone's daughter or son, someone's spouse. They needed Jesus. There is a story in the Bible where Jesus is at a house of people who he was not supposed to be with. The religious people of course were disgusted and asked the disciples - Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners? (Matthew 9:10-11) He does because he loves them and knows the possibilities their lives hold if they stop living the lies they were raised with. So I want to challenge you today - are you one of those who society has labelled and cast off to some corner so they don't have do see you? If you are, it is time to realize that Jesus looks at you very differently. He comes in close and offers you a life that will fulfill you and your dreams. So let me address the other group in this story. Are you one of those who label people as say - stay away from me and my families. Clean you life up before you become part of my life. Here is your challenge. If we are called to be like Jesus and Jesus would walk among the outcasts, who are we not to do the same? What I learned living in that city is the Jesus is the only one who can make a difference and it takes all of us to walk with those who have been set aside. Who can you sit with today?

What are you afraid of? I am curious how you would answer that question. Some of our answers might have to to with situations and circumstances or people and relationships. We fear what might or might not happen. So we choose to play it safe. Jesus tells us - I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble . . . we don't like to hear that. We want a trouble free life with guarantee's. Jesus adds - take heart! I have overcome the world. (John 16:33) Don't let your fears discourage you or drive you back into your addictions. Adversity isn't going to evaporate anytime soon, however we can face it with boldness and humble love. So don't get stressed out. Don't become distracted. We know the world doesn't quite get Jesus . . . until they meet him for themselves. Choosing to follow Jesus will get you in trouble in this world . . . but remember, Jesus tells us that he has overcome this world.

John 16:33 In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. The Bible is full of stories of people just like you and me. The same people who cast our demons and defeated giants also made mistakes that would send the rest of us to jail. These were the people who left everything to follow Jesus. They didn't get better jobs or more stable lives, they just got Jesus. The got to drink of living water. Jesus never promised to eliminate all the chaos from our lives. He did say he would bring meaning to them. He invites us into a story of grace and redemption. The same stories the disciples got wrong time and time again. If you wonder why you still face some of the same struggles you brought into your relationship with God, you are in good company. In spite of ourselves, he promises to be with us while we reach toward him to find more meaning in our circumstances. So what trouble are you facing right now and how are you leaning into Jesus? This is where we find the real blessing.

I have a friend who is facing an incredible external crisis. He has several choices. One, he can go back to his addiction numbing the pain of the crisis. Two, he can blame everyone and everything around him for what is happening. Three, he can pretend that nothing is happening and simply ignore the reality of the situation. Four, he can wake up, take one day at a time, stay clean and live with the hope that he has in Christ. We all face situations and circumstances that are out of our control in life. It is only when we abide in Christ that we have the wisdom and strength to navigate life. It is only in Christ that we have a community of people who will walk with us and help us understand what the next step is. So today, what will be your choice that you take?

One of the qualities of Jesus is he had this knack for seeing who people were becoming and helping them move in that direction. When he saw Matthew, while others saw a tax collector who ripped people off, he saw someone who would be influential as one of his disciples. When a group of men pulled a woman from a scandalous affair, he didn't see an adulteress, rather he saw a person who was about to begin living a better story. He knew the power of love would transform anyone. What do you see when you look at yourself in the mirror? Does your reflection see the person you were or the person that you can become in Christ? All of us need to allow grace to influence how we see ourselves. Also we need to grant the same grace to others. Is there anyone that you have written off because you only see where they have been and not where Christ wants to take them? Jesus sets the example for us, seeing who people can and are becoming and not who they use to be.

One day Jesus walks up to the Pool of Bethesda and meets a man disabled for 38 years, strikes up a conversation and asks the man if he wanted to be healed. The man told Jesus that every time the waters were stirred, he had no one to help him into the pool to be healed. Jesus looks at the man and says - get up and walk home . . . and he did! How many of us act and feel like this man. We sit by the pool of hoping for a better life, more money, to be free from our past and our addictions. So we sit and wait for something to happen. Here is the good news, Jesus can step into your situation and change you. Your circumstances may not change, but he can bring healing to what is going on inside of you. This of course is the real cause of our addictions, sufferings and lose of hope. Isn't it time to yes yes to Jesus' invitation of grace and love? There is a world of possibilities waiting!

I think about the possibilities of what Christ has done, is doing and will do. Paul writes in Galatians about what it means to be free and yet he tells us some choose to live in addiction instead. Yesterday, I was witness to 15 people who declared that Christ has set them free and they are choosing to follow Him. Knowing the back story of many of those, I am humbled and amazed at what Christ will do when we allow Him access to our minds and hearts. they testimonies were moving and powerful and left little doubt what can happen when we choose to follow Jesus. So you wake up today . . . who are going to follow? The enemy wants to distract you away from seeing Christ and how he desires to set you free. The enemy wants to keep you enslaved, it doesn't matter to what, he just wants to keep you in prison with no hope. My heart is full of Jesus today because of the stories I heard yesterday. My hope for you is that your mind and heart is full of Jesus today . . . and tomorrow . . . and the next day until we come face to face with the Author and Finisher of our faith.

So Jesus did what no other person in history could. He predicted his own death and resurrection and pulled it off. This sets him apart from every other religious leader in history. The question then is - What does this mean? If this is true (and there were plenty of witnesses that saw him) what does this mean for me and you?
If Christ came and died and rose again - defeating death and evil, if he could do the impossible - what can he do for you? He can and will do the impossible in you and those around you. There are plenty of witnesses to this kind of transformation. If you need some witnesses, come to GBC (1899 Marietta Ave, Lancaster) this Sunday at 10:45. There are 17 people going into the waters of baptism that will testify what God can and will do. Jesus wants to do a work of restoration in your life - the question is - will you let him?

04/03/2023

So this is Holy Week . . . the time when we reflect on the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In Mark 10, as Jesus approached Jerusalem, he told them for the third time that he was going to die and rise again. But they did not hear him, they were still caught up in who was going to sit on the right and left of Jesus when he over threw Rome. They missed the larger picture of what Jesus was about to do. He was about to take on all known evil, immersing himself in the judgement of God, he was going to pay what they could not possibly pay for, he was about to set them free. God wants to do so much more in your life than you could ever imagine, but we limit ourselves because we have our own thinking where we miss out on the larger picture of what God is up to. So this week, why not take the time to listen and see what God wants to do in your life instead of settling for a version of life you control. Remember - He is risen and so can you be found alive in the Kingdom of God.

There is an ancient prayer to God where one of the phrases goes like this:
I want whatever you want
Because you want it
The way you want it
As long as you want it . . .
How many times do we wake up and think and live the way we want rather than what God wants? Christ, on his way to the Cross said - I came not to be served but to serve and give my life a ransom for many . . . why not start your day asking Christ what he wants? Things just might go better.

Every ask yourself - How did I get here? Everyone one of us has a story and if you don't know your story - others will tell it for you. Hebrews 12:2 tells us that we need to focus our attention on Jesus, the author and finisher if our faith. What do authors do? They write stories. Jesus wants to write your story. He wants to bring you to the freedom that he brings instead of the addictions we bring on ourselves. So what story are you going to allow to be written today? Your version or some version other people will impose on you? Or will you allow Jesus to write the story of what he knows you can become? Today is a good day to let him begin writing!
