Many years ago I was at CBN in Virginia Beach. Inside their studios, I found myself standing next to a short gentleman in a suit. To be polite, I introduced myself "Good morning sir, my name is Christopher, I am a missionary".

He smiled warmly and replied "Good morning. I am John and I pastor a little church down the road from here".

I found out later that I had just met the legendary Pastor John Jimenez, pastor of the famous 5000-member Rock Church of Virginia Beach.

Humility goes a long way ....

Then there was Dad Hagin. Thousands of people had come to hear him preach and were waiting for the service to start.

Back in the Green Room, Dad grabbed my hand in a tight grip and asked me with a shaky voice, "Doc, do you think that there is anyone who has come out to hear me preach tonight?"

Small in his own eyes. Yes humility really does go a long way.

One of the greatest privileges of my life has been to stand in the shadow of such men .....

TEARS AND FIRE

"He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him". Ps 126:6

Tears of brokenness, tears of contrition and repentance; tears for a world lost and dying without Jesus.

"Holy laughter" can be a "personal experience", but it does not bring revival, fire, and harvest - but tears do. Tears are the key to bringing in the harvest. Church history tells us so.

An eyewitness to the Welsh revival said "It was not the eloquence of Evan Roberts that broke men down, but his tears. “He would break down, crying bitterly for God to bend them, in an agony of prayer, the tears coursing down his cheeks, with his whole frame writhing. Strong men would break down and cry like children…a sound of weeping and wailing would fill the air”.

Brokenness is the key to Pentecostal power. The measure to which we bend before God, and the lesser we are in ourselves; that is the measure to which we will walk in the Power of God.

OF WHOM THE WORLD WAS NOT WORTHY

Several years before I received Jesus and I was a cadet, there was a time when my dad raised and commanded a field artillery regiment. Whenever I was on leave I used to take my .22 rifle and go shooting in the outskirts of the regimental lines.

One day, as I was walking through a snake-infested thick overgrown jungle of trees, vines and bushes in the area, I stumbled upon a crumbling old wall. I climbed over the wall and found myself in an ancient abandoned cemetery. I began to read the inscriptions on the gravestones. They were very old, some from the early 1800's. Some graves stood alone, others were in pairs, some were of entire families buried side by side, husbands and wives with children in graves of varying sizes.

As I read the inscriptions I understood that these were graves of Englishmen and Scotsmen who had come to India as missionaries and had died in the mission field. After reading the inscriptions I walked away from there. As the years went I forgot all about the place.

Decades later one day the Holy Spirit reminded me of that old, crumbling and abandoned cemetery in the Punjab. I did not know anything then, but today I know something about the history of missions to that region. Missionaries from England and Scotland, full of zeal for Jesus and for His Gospel, left everything and took their families with them to the field. With all the diseases around those days, the rate of attrition was very high. These missionaries knew that the chances of their coming back home was almost nil, so they packed their belongings in wooden coffins instead of cases or trunks. They preached the Gospel facing terrible odds, and many died on the field preaching to the lost rather than quit. Their families died with them. I remember the graves of 1 and 2 year old children buried beside their parents.

Today their bones lie forgotten in abandoned old cemeteries all over the foreign field, thousands of miles away from home. England and Scotland have forgotten them, but they are known in Heaven where their names shine brightly as the stars in the sky.
As they lie there in their graves, they are waiting to hear the sound of the Trumpet when Christ returns. They were buried in weakness but they shall rise in glory!

As a new believer, the stories of such men and women moved me, inspired me. We who have given our lives to the preaching of the Gospel to the lost in our day, bear with us the heritage left behind by those heroes of old. We are reaping with joy the harvest from the precious seed that they sowed with tears. Our lives are far easier than theirs, but we still have to pay a price, and that is laying down our own ambitions and lives to take up the Cross and follow Jesus. We are walking on paths of Glory, treading on the bloodstained footsteps of our Master, and of His saints who gave everything for the sake of the Gospel.

Tonight my thoughts go back to those whose bodies lie in that forgotten cemetery outside the regimental lines of that field artillery regiment. I can hear our Lord Jesus calling, "Follow me, and I will make you Fishers of men" (Matt 4:19).

I can hear Him say "If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it" (Luke 9:23-24).

In the words of my old mentor George Verwer, who God used to light the Fire of Missions in my heart, "COME! LIVE! DIE!"

The inscription on the tombstone of Scottish-Canadian Missionary John Geddie, who brought the Gospel of Jesus to the New Hebrides islands in the South Pacific :

"John Geddie, D.D, Born in Scotland 1815. When he landed in the New Hebrides in 1848, there were no Christians here, and when he left in 1872 there were no heathen."

Yesterday was Memorial Day and we remembered our servicemen who have given their lives in war in the service of our country.

Then the Holy Spirit stirred in my heart to remember those missionaries, soldiers of the Cross who laid down their lives out on the foreign fields. They served a King who is far greater than any earthly nation, government or ruler. They are neither remembered nor celebrated by today's church as they should be, but they are God's eternal heroes. For those of my generation, they stand out as shining lights and role models. We studied their lives and wanted to be like them. Their names shall live for evermore.

They number in the thousands, but here are a few names. Let us stop for a moment to think of their lives, of how they walked with God and served Him. These heroes and heroines of the Cross died in foreign fields and never returned home.

Such was their dedication that up until the early 1900s, missionaries would go to the foreign fields carrying their belongings in wooden coffins that they would be buried in, not knowing if they would ever return.

Eric Liddell. 1902 – 1945, (SCOTLAND) GAVE HIS LIFE IN CHINA
William Carey. 1761 – 1834, (ENGLAND) DIED IN INDIA
David Livingstone. 1813 – 1873, (SCOTLAND) DIED IN AFRICA
C. T. Studd. 1860–1931, (ENGLAND) DIED IN THE CONGO
John Geddie. 1815–1872 (CANADA) DIED IN NEW HEBRIDES
Mary Slessor. 1889-1955, (SCOTLAND) DIED IN WEST AFRICA
Sadhu Sundar Singh. 1889-1929, (INDIA) DIED IN INDIA
Philip James "Jim" Elliot 1927–1956, (USA) DIED IN ECUADOR

"Oh Jesus if I die upon a foreign field someday
'Twould be no more than love demands, no less could I repay,
"No greater love hath mortal man than for a friend to die,"
These are the words he gently spoke to me,
"If just a cup of water I place within your hand
Then just a cup of water is all that I demand,"
But if by death to living they can thy glory see,
I'll take my cross and follow close to thee".

HOW DO WE KNOW IF A SUPERNATURAL PHENOMENON IS OF GOD?

When I was in my teens, my father brought in a famous Muslim "holy man" to our house to clean our home from evil spirits. This "holy man" could contact the spirit world and perform supernatural acts. Our whole family along with our servants gathered in his presence. He asked for a kerosene stove and asked our servants to light the flame. Then he asked for a wok to be put on the flames. The wok was then filled to two-thirds with cooking oil.

After a few minutes the oil in the wok began to boil vigorously. The "holy man" then ordered me as the oldest son in the house to put my right foot into the boiling oil. I was afraid but I obeyed. He began to chant and pray loudly. I put my foot into the boiling oil and made three circular movements with it in the wok, as per his command. I did not feel a thing and was not burned!

My point is this: I grew up experiencing many such supernatural phenomena as a Muslim, thinking that because they were supernatural they were of God. After I came to Jesus, I learned that not every supernatural phenomenon is of God. These days many claim to have seen and experienced all kinds of supernatural phenomena in meetings and in their personal lives. Some of these things may be of God, while others may be things that can lead us down the dangerous path of deception.

So how can we know?

Remember that for a supernatural phenomenon to be of God, it must always line up with Scripture. Also, it must point to the Lord Jesus and to His Cross. Then it will cause people to come to Jesus and can even bring healing to people in their minds and their bodies. Anything else should be discarded no matter how "harmless" it looks. If it is merely sensational or exciting, or if it draws attention to the man on the platform, or to the phenomenon itself instead of to the Lord Jesus Christ, I would put it aside. We all have to draw a line somewhere, and I have found it safest and best to draw the line at the Word of God.

In the Bible we see God doing creative miracles, making blind eyes to see and deaf ears to hear. He makes lame people to walk; people receive the baptism with the Holy Ghost and speak in other languages; sinners receive Jesus and go from death to eternal life. This is the ministry of Jesus as seen in the Bible. If anybody ignores THESE Supernatural manifestations and majors in OTHER manifestations that are not even found in the Bible, I would be doubly careful of such things. Let us be careful that we do not end up in phenomenon that serve to merely entertain Christians but do not point sinners to the Cross.

Let us therefore stay close to Jesus. Let us worship Him. Let us live our lives in His Word and be continually filled with His Spirit. Let us eagerly seek the gifts of His Spirit, demonstrate His power and lead sinners to the Cross.

FINANCIAL INTEGRITY IN LIFE AND MINISTRY

I have been thinking about Financial Integrity, about how it is one of the most important aspects of ministry. How we "acquire" money and how we spend it are important. The Bible does teach us about man's relationship with money.

So here are a few thoughts that are on my mind:

1. Firstly we should remember that to serve in the ministry is a "high calling" from God. It is a holy calling. We live our lives before God, and He sees everything. Because of this we should resolve from the onset to establish and maintain 100% integrity in the way in which we handle money.

2. Choose to live comfortably but modestly. Don't live at a standard of living that is high above those who make sacrifices to support your ministry. This is a good "rule of the thumb" to live by. You do not always HAVE to have the latest and the most expensive things just because it is trendy in the world around us. In the New Testament, CONTENTMENT is a big thing, as opposed to "covetousness" which in the Greek simply means "A greedy desire to have more than what we already have". If we live simple lives of thanksgiving, contentment, and selfless sacrifice, then God's provisions will always flow our way!

3. In the ministry EVERYTHING that we have is God's. This is called the principle of "stewardship" as opposed to "ownership". Because we are stewards of God's provisions, we do not hoard for ourselves, but sow and invest into God's work. Help the poor, give to missions, etc. Jesus Himself said in Matt 6:19-21 "Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also".

4. If God uses you in the supernatural, then inevitably you will have a God-given influence over people that is because of the anointing upon your life. That influence is a holy thing, to be used as a conduit of God's blessings to others. NEVER use that influence to sell products to make money, or to prophesy over people to manipulate them to give to you financially. As a man of God your trust should be in God alone, and He will take care of you. Of course, if you are a businessman who is doing ministry on the side using your earnings to spread the Gospel, that is commendable and good. This is an area that we have to be careful with.

5. If money is given to you for a particular purpose, never use it for other things, even if these "other things" are pressing needs in other areas of the ministry. Use the money given for an express purpose for that purpose alone, and not for other things. Be very clear about these things. It is called "integrity". Sometimes ministries raising money put a phrase in very small print that "any excess funds may be used for other purposes" to cover themselves legally. Remember that legal loopholes never define morals, ethics or honesty. We should be 100% honest, simple, and clear with money.

6. Be very honest and transparent with how you spend money. If we have integrity we have nothing to hide. Britta and I decided years ago that anybody who gives to our ministry or prays for us can come and look at our books to see how we spend the money that God's people have entrusted to us. If they so desire they can come and see how we live our lives before God and before man. We have nothing to hide from God or from man.

There is a lot more that can be said, but I will close with this thought:

As ministers, when it comes to money, our marriages, our children, our relationships etc, let us live pure and transparent lives that please the Father and are an example for the next generation of believers. Let us be humble, accessible to people, living joyful lives of service, bringing glory to our Lord and Saviour in all things.

MOST URGENT NEED
I am writing this from Argentina where I am right now. I am on my way back home from our two Crusades in Zambia where we saw a great harvest of souls for our Lord Jesus! PTL!
We have an URGENT need right now. Our generator that runs our crusades broke down on the last night of our Crusade in Zambia, and we need to replace it right away. This is urgent because our Africa Team will be leaving soon for our two Crusades in Mozambique in June.
A new 65 kva generator costs $ 19,000 plus installation into our truck and cables etc. Any sum that you could help us with would be a great help. The generators are available and ready to purchase in Zimbabwe.
WE HAVE ALREADY BEEN PROMISED $ 6000. So the total need at this point is $ 13,000 more.
You could give through our "donate/give" link at www.pentecostalfire.com or send a check.
