Thank you to everyone who came out to buy clothes for the Ukrainian Orphans, and thank you SO MUCH to the WINGS ladies who donated almost $800 to help ship and buy more foods. It is such a beautiful thing to help people from war-torn countries rebuild and try to live a better life.

God doesn't call the qualified; He qualifies the called.

I heard this statement in mass a few weeks ago, and it has stuck with me since. "God qualifies the called." How many times have you put yourself down because you don't think you are educated enough or know enough to talk to others about your faith? Maybe you've turned down the opportunity to become a religion teacher, Deacon, or Priest because of fear? Fear that you aren't good enough to lead in those positions. Maybe it was even as small as not being able to talk to a friend about what it means to be Catholic or a follower of Jesus.

I know I've been there. I've doubted myself. I've put myself down. I've compared myself to others who know more than me. But we can't let that stop us from being called to Jesus's will.

If you want to be a religion teacher - do it. If you are want to become a Deacon - do it. If you feel that tug on your heart to enter the Priesthood - do it. God will help you become a disciple who will lead many to salvation. He will qualify you and make you strong every day.

Even Jesus's most precious disciples were just fishermen. He made them Fishers of People.

I was talking with someone about why they left the church and was expecting the usual reasons about scandal and political views, but actually got, “I don’t have a connection with it.” I sat on that sentence for a minute, reread it and thought about it; there was a simple solution to that issue.

How do we connect to our partners, friends, or family? Do we talk with them, get to know them, and then stop, expecting to have learned everything about them? No. We continually nurture our connection with them.

We talk with them.
We learn more about them.
We spend time with them.

The same goes for our connection and relationship to God. We are constantly growing, not only in our faith but in our minds and bodies. A majority of us learn about God when we are young and see Confirmation as a “graduation” or a “freedom” from religion when, in fact, it is only the beginning. We are forever growing in our faith. Our faith travels with us through new chapters in our life. Good or bad times, we connect to God in different ways through our trials, similar to our earthly relationships. We love. We celebrate. We fight. We forgive. We get angry. We place blame on people who care about us.

We can do the same thing with God.

God is our creator who sent his only Son, Jesus, to walk with us and teach us. God has always had a longing to connect with us. From the days of Adam and Eve, He has been a friend who wants to have a relationship with us, but if we choose not to be with Him, talk with Him, learn from Him, ask Him for help, then we will never “feel a connection” with our faith, and most importantly, with God.

✨Church Spotlight | Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist ✨

The hard work, dedication, perseverance and commitment of countless individuals have kept the traditions and community of The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist for more than a century. The cathedral has many roots and owes its existence to those from many diverse backgrounds. In the 18th century, French Catholic émigrés fled Haiti. Some fled from the French Revolution while others had their own reasons for heading onward. With a welcoming arm to immigrants from all walks of life, more than ten years after the first parish of Savannah was founded, the church of Saint John the Baptist came to life.

After nearly a decade of growing a community, the space in which the church was housed needed to expand. Parishioners were growing in leaps and bounds and the community yearned for a larger property for which to share their message. It took almost three decades and a shift in Diocese and Bishops, but in April of 1839, while including almost a third of the entire Catholic population of the state of Georgia, the new Church of Saint John the Baptist took flight.

It was nearly four decades later, under a new Diocese and in a new location that the new Cathedral came to be. It stood for twenty years before being nearly decimated by fire in 1898. It took two critical years to rebuild, but the new Cathedral was dedicated in October of 1900. There were still more renovations and shifts to come, but by November of 2000, there was a 100th anniversary of the rededication of the Cathedral and it still stands in its historical glory today welcoming countless visitors and parishioners annually.
