I was talking with someone about why they left the church and was expecting the usual reasons about scandal and political views, but actually got, “I don’t have a connection with it.” I sat on that sentence for a minute, reread it and thought about it; there was a simple solution to that issue.
How do we connect to our partners, friends, or family? Do we talk with them, get to know them, and then stop, expecting to have learned everything about them? No. We continually nurture our connection with them.
We talk with them.
We learn more about them.
We spend time with them.
The same goes for our connection and relationship to God. We are constantly growing, not only in our faith but in our minds and bodies. A majority of us learn about God when we are young and see Confirmation as a “graduation” or a “freedom” from religion when, in fact, it is only the beginning. We are forever growing in our faith. Our faith travels with us through new chapters in our life. Good or bad times, we connect to God in different ways through our trials, similar to our earthly relationships. We love. We celebrate. We fight. We forgive. We get angry. We place blame on people who care about us.
We can do the same thing with God.
God is our creator who sent his only Son, Jesus, to walk with us and teach us. God has always had a longing to connect with us. From the days of Adam and Eve, He has been a friend who wants to have a relationship with us, but if we choose not to be with Him, talk with Him, learn from Him, ask Him for help, then we will never “feel a connection” with our faith, and most importantly, with God.
