The clergy of the Eastern Region of the Metropolis met at Holy Protection Monastery today to plan the regional ministries for the upcoming Church year. We thank Gerondissa Olympiada and the sisters of the monastery for their hospitality and prayers!

Our Ionian Village adventure concluded on Monday after a full weekend in Athens that included:

A visit to Nafplion on Friday to visit the historical sites related to Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first governor of Greece, Theodoros Kolokotronis, and Staikos Staikopoulos, memorializing their heroic contributions to the Greek War of Independence. We then visited the Metropolis Cathedral in Athens, where we visited the statue of Archbishop Damaskinos, the only religious leader in Europe to speak out against N**i aggression during WW2, and to venerate the chains of St. Peter from his imprisonment recorded in the Book of Acts. We ended the day with a dinner on a scenic beach in Athens.

On Saturday, we visited the Monastery of St. Ephraim of Nea Makri, a newly revealed saint whose intercessions are powerfully working to heal the sick and especially young people who struggle with addiction. The relics of this saint, martyred in the 15th century, were revealed 500 years later to a nun, Osia Makaria, who helped to build the monastery that now attracts hundreds of daily visitors seeking the intercessions of this newly revealed wonderworking Saint.

Sunday began with a Liturgy at 6:30am followed by breakfast at the hotel and a day filled with visiting historic sites in Athens: the Acropolis, the new Acropolis museum, the war museum, and the Syntagma Square Changing of the Guard. We ended the day with a farewell dinner dance at the hotel ballroom filled with laughter and tearful farewells.

Ionian Village 2026 was a most blessed experience. We look forward to sharing the highlights of our trip in person when we return to Lancaster!

Highlights from our last full week at the Ionian Village camp before we go to Athens:

Trip to Patras to venerate the relics and X-shaped cross of St. Andrew.

Ferry ride to Kefalonia to venerate the incorrupt relic of St. Gerasimos and to climb down a narrow hole to visit his cave.

Day trip to Mega Spilion, the second oldest monastery in the world, to visit the cave where the fist icon by the hand of St. Luke the Evangelist was found; Mega Lavra Monastery to visit where the Greek Independence started with the proclamation from Bishop Gerasimos of Patras («Ελευθερία ή Θάνατος» / “Freedom or Death”); and Kalvryta where over 1,000 Greek men and boys were executed on a mountain during the N**i occupation of World War 2.

We also drove by the church of the Panaghia Fidousa (Panaghia of the Snakes) in Kefalonia, which will be visited by the “holy snakes” from August 6-15 to honor the Theotokos during her Dormition Feastday.

Relics we venerated at Mega Spilion Monastery:
- Saint John the Baptist
- St. Luke the Evangelist
- Right hand of St. Haralambos (skin intact and warm after 1700 years)
- St. Paraskevi
- Skull of St. Barbara
- St. Mary Magdalene
- And many more!

On Friday we travel to Nafplion, Athens, and Nea Makri to conclude our time with the Ionian Village camp!

Week 2 at Ionian Village was filled with historical adventures and spiritual blessings…

Monday - Trips to Ancient Olympia, the Skifiadis Monastery, and return to IV for Vespers and “Greek Dance Party!”

Wednesday - Trip to the ancient Kastro (Castle) followed by Vespers and a “Beach Party” for the campers.

Thursday - IV Camp Director, Fr. Steven Klund, led us on a Pilgrimage to the beautiful St. Nicholas Church in Gastouni where Fr. Georgios brought out the relics for us to venerate, including two pieces from the tomb of Christ, a piece of the Precious Cross of Christ, the right hand of St. John the Baptist, the relics and skoufo of St. Savas the Sanctified and his mother, St. Sophia, and the Petrahili (stole) of St. Nektarios the wonderworker. Fr. Georgios gave Fr. Hector the great blessing to wear the petrahili of St. Nektarios while anointing the campers with fragrant myrrh from the tomb of Christ.

From Gastouni we rode the bus to the Kimisis Church in Bartholomio where we served Orthros and took in the beautiful architecture and iconography of the church.

Our last stop was at the Panaghia Elousa Church in Glypha where we had the privilege of venerating more incredible relics of Saints and a piece of the belt of the Theotokos.

We ended the day at camp with an outdoor Vespers at the setting of the sun and a “Carnival” for the campers.

Friday — we woke up at 5am to board the early morning ferry for our pilgrimage to the island of Zakynthos and the Cathedral of St. Dionysios of Zakynthos. Taking refuge in the church from the thunderstorm that caught us while waking from the port to the church, we were blessed to venerate the incorrupt relic (full body) of St. Dionysios in a special room of the church.

We ended the day by returning to the camp for a beautiful outdoor Paraklesis to the Theotokos, followed by pictures and a “White Out Dance.”

Sunday starts a new week at camp that includes trips to Patras and the Cathedral of St. Andrew, St. Gerasimos on the island of Kefalonia, Kalavryta, and Athens!

Ionian Village update from Fr. Hector:
Our family and 6 Goyans from Annunciation Church (Christos, Xia, Vasili, Alexandra Nachtigall, Serafima Billis, and Olivia Reinhold) all arrived safely to Athens on Thursday and are having a most blessed start to our time at Ionian Village. Our group of 40 IV campers was the first to land in Athens, and our bus stopped for lunch and to view the breathtaking Corinth Canal along our 4-hour drive to the beautiful Ionian Village situated on the western coastline of Greece. We were later joined by the rest of the ~80 campers for Session 2.

The daily life at Ionian Village is similar to Camp Nazareth with morning and evening prayer services at the chapel, singing “Rich men became poor” in Greek and English before every meal, daily Orthodox Life sessions with one our four serving clergy, and rotations that include athletic events, arts and crafts, and learning about our Orthodox Faith.

During last evening’s “Night with God”, the campers baked their own prosfora loaves which were used during this morning’s Divine Liturgy in the outdoor chapel.

This coming week we are gearing up for pilgrimages to Olympia, the island of Zakynthos and the monastery of St. Dionysios, Kastro, and Gastouni. Thank God we are blessed with a terrific group of campers, counselors, and clergy!
