“Know that the LORD, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.” - Psalm 100:3

How are we supposed to reassure ourselves when we doubt as Christians? This past Sunday we spent some time looking at 1 John 3:19-24 and how the Christian is to combat doubts. One of the encouragements John gives the believer is to remember who God is to find confidence and reassurance. When we are doubting that we are saved, our greatest assurance is not anything in us but in who we belong to as Children of God. Just a few thoughts on who we belong to:

1. We belong to the God who is infinite, eternal, and unchanging.

2. We belong to the God who is omniscient, omnipresent, and omnipotent.

3. We belong to the God who is abounding in grace and delights to show mercy.

4. We belong to the God who created all things by the word of His power.

5. We belong to the God who gave us salvation in the person and work of Jesus Christ.

6. We belong to the God who has given us a living and eternal hope through the risen Lord Jesus Christ.

7. We belong to the God who sent us the Holy Spirit to speak to our spirit, reminding us that we are children of God.

8. We belong to the God who has given us brothers and sisters in Christ to walk with us through this life.

9. We belong to the God who is coming again to judge the living and the dead.

10. We belong to the God who through his Son has given us life that is eternal with Him in glory.

Let us stand in awe and wonder today that through faith in Jesus Christ we are called children of God and united to God. With this knowledge of who we belong to, confidence is built up and doubts are silenced. So today, let us be reminded of the very truth that we belong to God the Father through the Son by the Holy Spirit. Let us be encouraged and strengthened in our faith by dwelling on these truths about God.

“34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” - John 13:34–35

This past Sunday we looked at John’s reminder that if we are truly found in Christ, then we will love one another (1 John 3:11-18). He challenges the believer with this command by pointing to Christ’s love for us. Using Christ’s sacrificial death on the cross as the primary reason for our love to one another. It is well worth our time to consider Christ’s love for us by looking at other passages that express the depth of His love for us.

1. John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” – The beginning, the middle, and the end of our salvation is rooted in the love that God has for His people. If God is not love, then we would not have salvation. Let us rest in the love of God for our salvation today.

2. Romans 5:8, “but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” – Every time we come to this passage it should bring us to our knees in humility. For it was the love of Christ that while we were still sinners, while were still enemies, while we were still unlovable, He died for us. How can you show love to that hard person to love today?

3. John 15:13, “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” – Christ’s love is a love that willing to do whatever it takes to show and share that love. Christ gave himself up for His people that we might have life. The definition of true sacrificial love is seen in Christ on the cross. Christ’s love goes so far that he took the guilt of our sins upon Himself, faced the wrath of God’s punishment, and was forsaken by God ALL that we might have life. How can you love sacrificially today?

4. 1 John 4:19, “We love because he first loved us.” – Our love for one another is not an emotion or a feeling, but action flowing out of the love that we have received in Christ. If we are going to properly love one another, it must be deeply rooted in our understanding of Christ’s love poured out on the cross for you and for me. The love of Christ should not only be our example of true love, not only be our incentive of how to love, but must be the cause of our love as well. Who can you show the love of Christ to today?

“3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5 who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.” – 1 Peter 1:3–5

This past Easter Sunday we celebrated the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead is the basis of our faith as Christians (1 Cor. 15:17). Not only is it the basis of our faith but as we see in this passage, it is the cause of our hope as well. We three reasons to have hope in this passage:

1. We have a living hope. Because Jesus rose from the dead and is alive, all who place their faith in Him have an undying hope. This hope in the risen Lord Jesus Christ is not only an expectation in the future but it also impacts the believer’s present life. Peter’s point is because Jesus is alive, we are made new, born again, regenerate. (John 3:3-8) The believer’s hope is not like this world’s hope; it is a hope that is alive and active. Practically, is the hope that is found in the resurrection changing you now? Believers, let us strive to set our minds on things that are above because we have a living hope.

2. We have a perfect hope. Peter tells us that this hope that comes from the resurrection comes with an inheritance. The concept of inheritance for God’s people is seen throughout the Bible. For example, the Israelites were promised the inheritance of the promised land of Canaan. (Gal. 3:18) However, now in contrast to the Israelites, this inheritance is in Heaven. This inheritance is described as, “imperishable, undefiled, and unfading” three words that emphasize perfection. This inheritance is unlike any earthly inheritance, it cannot be taken away nor can it waste away. The inheritance of the believer is perfectly held in reserve for them. Believers, let us find confidence in our inheritance in Heaven.

3. We have a secure hope. Peter tells us that this inheritance we have hope in is being continually guarded by the power of God. So not only is our inheritance reserved for us, but it is also being preserved for us until we reach Heaven. Think of all the places that have security and guards. They do not compare to the security of our inheritance in Heaven. It is a promise from God that by His power He will securely bring us to our inheritance. It is the promise that this inheritance is not going to be taken from us nor are we going to be kept from it. Believers, let us find great comfort in the security of God in our hope of Heaven.
