Theologian and Pastor/author Voddie Baucham has gone home to be with the Lord. If you have never listened to him or read any of his books you should. He was a fierce defender of Christian faith. RIP my friend

The trip to the garden: John 15: 1-11

Come now, let us leave. With these words, Jesus calls his disciples to leave the upper room and go with him to the garden of Gethsemane, which is on the Mount of Olives. To get to the garden, Jesus and his disciples had to leave the southwest corner of the old city of Jerusalem and wind their way across the Tyropeon and Kidron Valleys and finally up to Gethsemane. This path would have taken them past the many vineyards that around the outskirts of Jerusalem in that time. In the bright light of the full Passover moon, the vineyards would have been quite visible. Jesus once again used what was at hand to illustrate the truth He wanted to instill into his followers, and as they walked past the vineyards, he began to teach on this most profound discourse on the vine and the branches.

“I am the true Vine and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit and he prunes the branches that do bare fruit so they will produce even more”.. John 15:1

Then Jesus said “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30

Last Sunday, Pastor Paul preached on this text and I was moved afterwards to review and highlight this in this week’s blog.

Jesus’s last words from the cross were, “Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit” and with these words, he breathed his last.
Luke 23:46

Luke also tells us that it was about noon and yet the light from the sun was gone. It was a very bizarre day and now the real fireworks started. There was a massive earthquake, and at the same time the curtain in the temple was torn from top to bottom. I am reminded of the earthquake of when Moses was giving the law. And now we have the reminder of Jesus words “that he hadn’t come to abolish the law, but to fulfill it” some 1500 years later, the law was for filled in Jesus.

Then the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.
Mark 15:38

Perhaps one of the priests told Mark about the veil. But for sheer drama there is nothing like this in all of recorded history. This cry in the darkness of the cross, the dismissing of the spirit of Jesus, and the rending of the veil in the temple—Mark brings them all together in order that we might understand what these events mean. As Jesus’ cry rang out, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? there must have been many in the crowd who recognized that it was the opening words of Psalm 22. If you want to get the background and atmosphere of the cross, read that psalm through. There is no adequate explanation for the question that Jesus asked except that which Scripture itself gives, God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Narrow Road Christian Fellowship weekly blog

For years we have enjoyed gaining insight into the scriptures by the reading of devotions and others Christian writings. As the church we would like to offer this weekly encouragement for you to consider.

Today we’re going to look into the life and ministry of Nehemiah. He is known for many qualities, but today we’re going to focus on one aspect. How he recorded the names of the people that worked on the wall, and why they were important to him. Nehemiah 3:1-32

One commentator has said, God is a great believer in putting names down. That is true. There are many chapters like this in the Scriptures. But that should really encourage us. It means that God has not forgotten our names either. He loves to record the names of obscure people.
