Today, instead of saying “good bye” to our 16 departing 5th graders, we were hoping to say, “See you next year”! Unfortunately, though, that is not the case.
In a world of restructuring and downsizing, with one reason being shrinking parish and school enrollment in some areas, it is disappointing.
If given the opportunity to continue their middle school education at St. Ed’s, the number of families leaving for public schools drops from 93%…to 31% based on recent surveys, retaining 69%…instead of the 6% retaining that WILL take place. If you’re keeping score at home…as of today, that’s one student out of the 16 continuing in catholic schools beyond this year, compared with 11 that would have stayed at St. Ed’s.
We need to be better than this.
We can only control what we do here at St. Ed’s. Do what we think will attract people to our school and our faith and share the great things we are doing in the hopes of being noticed.
With time, prayers and leadership, the hope will be that one day we won’t be saying, “Good Bye”, rather “See you next year”!
Good luck and many blessings to our 5th grade students leaving us. You will be missed, but we look forward to seeing you again and observing from a distance, all the great things you will be doing to make your world, and ours, a better place.
