A few things about the Christmas story:
1) There probably wasn't any inn in the story. The Greek word the King James Version translated "inn" is the same word as guest room in the story of the last supper. In fact newer translations, such as NIV and CSB, translate the word as guest room in the Christmas story. They probably stayed with family in Bethlehem, but with so many people visiting the city for the census, there wasn't any room in the guest room. That leads to the next thing.
2) Jesus wasn't born in a stable. In ancient Jewish homes people slept in the upstairs rooms. And they'd bring animals into the downstairs open area to protect them at night. Mary and Joseph were likely downstairs in that area with the animals. And Mary laid Jesus in a manger.
3) Jesus was born to a poor family. Luke 2:24 says that after his birth, his parents sacrificed two birds, according to Jewish law. Leviticus 12:8 says the law required the sacrifice of a sheep unless the family didn't have the means for a sheep, in which case they could sacrifice two birds. Though he is God, Jesus "emptied himself" (Php 2:7) of that glory when he came in as a human baby. This is just a small part of the truth from Hebrews 4:15, that "we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are--yet he did not sin." And that leads to the last one for now.
4) Jesus, being God, came with a purpose. He came, sent by the Father, to live the life we could not live--a life without sin, without rebellion against God, a life in perfect submission to the will of God. And he came to not only live that life but to die as the perfect sacrifice for our sins. So that baby born more than 2000 years ago came to save the souls of men.
