Juneteenth invites Episcopalians to remember that freedom is a sacred vocation, not only a historical milestone. It marks the moment when the last enslaved people in Galveston finally heard the news of emancipation—news that had already been proclaimed but not yet honored. From a spiritual lens, Juneteenth echoes God’s persistent call to liberation throughout Scripture, where the Holy One stands with the oppressed and urges communities to practice justice, mercy, and truth.

As Episcopalians, we hold this day as both celebration and examination. It summons us to repentance for the Church’s complicity in slavery and segregation, and to renewed commitment to beloved community, repair, and reconciliation. Juneteenth becomes a living reminder that God’s justice is never abstract; it demands action, solidarity, and courage. In honoring this day, we pledge to walk the path of freedom with humility, hope, and holy resolve.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that more than 250,000 enslaved Black people in Texas were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
