Before Service Prayer: Almighty, eternal God, in the Word of Your apostles and prophets You have proclaimed to us Your saving will. Grant us faith to believe Your promises that we may receive eternal salvation; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Today's Theme: Say it Out Loud - Jesus Leads Us. The Law was given through Moses. He was a marvelous leader of his people, but he could not take them to the Promised Land. The Law can never get God's people to the promised land. Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. Joshua, the successor of Moses, defeated the enemies of the people and led them into the Promised Land. Jesus defeats our enemies and shepherds us as his flock. The gracious Gospel of forgiveness of sins through faith in Jesus is the only way to the promised land of heaven. Jesus leads us all the way there.

Rooted in the Bible (365-day Bible) readings & commentary for June 14th:

Old Testament: 2 Samuel 22:1-23:7

-- In David’s song, God gets the credit for David’s successes in battle.
-- Chapter 23 verse 2 speaks about verbal inspiration. The Holy Spirit told the writers what to write, and they wrote it.

New Testament: Acts 8:1-31

-- Saul was converted on the road to Damascus.
-- Even though he looked godly before this time and was a devout Pharisee, he was an unbeliever.
-- His persecution of the church was NOT as he thought, a work done for the Lord.
-- Instead, by persecuting God’s people, He was persecuting God.
-- Never give up on those who don’t know Jesus! Saul not only came to faith but also became a powerful witness for Christ.
-- Tarsus was Paul’s hometown.

Psalm: Psalm 73:15-28

-- It appears, at least, superficially, that the righteous are oppressed and the wicked prosper (as described in the first half of the Psalm).
-- However, when you view the situation in the light of the counsel of God, you see that the opposite is true.

Rooted in the Bible (365-day Bible) readings & commentary for June 13th:

Old Testament: 2 Samuel 20:1-21:22

-- In 2 Samuel 17:25 we learned that Amasa was leader of Absalom's army. Why would David tell him to summon Judah?
-- Joab will not allow anyone to be promoted ahead of him. He's willing to kill a fellow Israelite to see that this does not happen. He also wants to avenge the rebellion.
-- David is aggressive in putting down rebellion. He should have been aggressive in the case of Absalom, instead of allowing him to steal the hearts of Israel.
-- The Gibeonites were the ones who pretended to be from a distant land. Joshua made a treaty with them when Israel was conquering the land. Saul broke this treaty. The famine was the result of this breaking.
-- The Gibeonites exacted the price of a token of lives for the lives slaughtered under Saul.
-- There comes a time when, as you get older, you need to come to grips with the fact that you can't do what you once where able to do. David's men helped David to understand this. Children often need to help their parents understand the same thing.

New Testament: Acts 8:4-40

-- The scattering of believers because of persecution meant that the Gospel was being preached in more and more places. This was the good that Jesus brought from the bad.
-- A sorcerer is someone who does things by the power of the devil.
-- Simon wanted to continue to do things that impressed people.
-- The apostles rejoice that the half-breeds known as Samaritans believe the good news.
-- Philip is Philip the Evangelist, one of the deacons selected for serving food.
-- The Scripture is a united whole. The Bible doesn't contradict itself, but presents to us a consistent message of salvation through faith in Jesus.

Proverbs: Proverbs 14:25-35

-- Verse 34 is often quoted when the subject of abortion comes up. The practice in our country is a disgrace to its people. The fact that it is legal should be disgraceful to every citizen.

Rooted in the Bible (365-day Bible) readings & commentary for June 12th:

Old Testament: 2 Samuel 18:19-19:43

-- Sometimes in life you need to keep your emotions in check because you have a duty to carry out.
-- David didn't do that when he mourned for Absalom.
-- Joab set him straight.
-- How awkward! “Am I still king? Do you still want me?” Then, of course, a fight ensued over who would bring the king back.

New Testament: Acts 7:44-8:3

-- Stephen comes to the conclusion of his sermon. They were worried about the temple. They should have been worried about their souls, because they “Always resist the Holy Spirit!”
-- When the enemies of the Gospel couldn't demolish it with their arguments, they resorted to brute force and murder.

Psalm: Psalm 73:1-14

- Asaph presents thoughts that are common among believers: “Why bother being Godly when it appears the wicked are the ones who have an easy life?”
-- Asaph addresses the dilemma in the second half of the Psalm.

Rooted in the Bible (365-day Bible) readings & commentary for June 11th:

Old Testament: 2 Samuel 15:15-18:18

-- There seems to be some animosity between “Israel” i.e. the ten northern tribes and “Judah and Jerusalem.” Israel was reluctant to make David King. There was a geographical separation as well. Israel had the long journey to make to get to Jerusalem.
-- With Absalom’s act of sexual immorality there would be no turning back.
-- Ahithophel could not bear the disgrace of not having his advice taken.
-- Although a pretty boy, Absalom was no fighter, or donkey rider.
-- Joab was not going to allow David’s discipline-less love for Absalom allow another opportunity for rebellion to arise.

New Testament: Acts 7:20-43

-- Stephen’s account includes details that are not contained in the book of Exodus.
-- Israel’s history was one of rebellion against God. God didn’t wasn’t pleased when Israel worshipped him AND other gods.

Psalm: Psalm 72:1-10

-- The rule of a wise king is a blessing for the people.
-- Solomon speaks of the King Jesus who rules from sea to sea, from the River to the ends of the earth. Jesus establishes His rule by His holy word.
-- Wise men from the east brought tribute to the baby Jesus.

Rooted in the Bible (365-day Bible) readings & commentary for June 10th:

Old Testament: 2 Samuel 15:13-16:14

-- Worse than simply facing a conspiracy, David was facing a conspiracy led against him by his own son.
-- The description of David’s flight from Jerusalem sounds like a funeral march.
-- Years later, David’s son would ascend the Mount of Olives to pray as the curse of sin descended upon him.
-- We will get a different story from Mephibosheth when David returns to the city.

New Testament: Acts 6:1-7:19

-- Not everyone can do the same job in the kingdom. Priority was given to preaching and teaching.
-- When the need arose, the church developed the office of deacon to deal with it. We view the ministry the same way today. The church has Christian freedom to meet the needs that arise, instead of declaring that there is only one God-ordained form of public ministry.
-- The qualifications for serving tables were noteworthy: full of the Spirit and wisdom.
-- Philip is Philip the Evangelist and Stephen becomes the first Christian martyr.
-- As in the case of Jesus’ trial, false witnesses are used to stir up trouble.
-- At all costs they wanted to defend a building, the temple!
-- Stephen launches into a summary of God’s gracious dealings with Israel.

Psalm: Psalm 71:19-24

-- The Psalmist believes (vs. 20) in the resurrection of the body.

06/09/2026

Rooted in the Bible (365-day Bible) readings & commentary for June 9th:

Old Testament: 2 Samuel 14:1-15:12

-- Absalom was guilty of taking matters into his own hands.
-- Absalom wasn’t called to repentance. He didn’t confess his sin.
-- Joab’s effort at reconciliation didn’t get at the heart of the matter which was sin.
-- Though a murderer, Absalom is bold in his demands and obviously doesn’t have much love for his father David.

New Testament: Acts 5:22-42

-- How appropriate that the believers would meet in the temple. Theirs was not a new religion but a continuation and fulfillment of the old.
-- The miracles attested to the fact that the message was true.
-- New Life Lutheran Church gets its name from Acts 5:20.
-- How futile it is to fight against God.
-- On the one hand, Gamaliel is right. By their persecution they were not able to stop Christ’s Kingdom from marching on. However, longevity doesn’t prove something is from God. Look at Islam, Hinduism, etc.
-- Jesus suffered for us. We count ourselves privileged if we suffer for His sake.

Proverbs: Proverbs 14:15-24

-- Solomon lists items which are not part of the life of the wise and righteous: being gullible, being quick tempered, being a flatterer, being prejudiced and being a talker and not a doer.

06/08/2026

Rooted in the Bible (365-day Bible) readings & commentary for June 8th:

Old Testament: 2 Samuel 13:1-39

-- R**e is characterized today as an act of violence.
-- In the case of Joab who waited to take revenge on Abner for his brother’s death, or in the case of Absalom, it appears that the custom was to do nothing until the right time presented itself to take revenge.
-- David’s family is ripped apart by strife, as Nathan predicted.

New Testament: Acts 4:23-5:11

-- The believers don’t ask for God’s punishment to be poured out on the rulers.
-- Instead, they ask for boldness to speak.
-- Another Pentecost occurs. They were filled with the Holy Spirit that enabled them to speak boldly.
-- A second description of the life of the church indicates again that the believers were devoted to God’s word and to each other.
-- The devil tries to make inroads into the fellowship of the believers.
-- Ananias and Sapphira were free to do what they wanted with the proceeds. If they wanted to give a portion, they could have. Instead, they lied to God. God refuses to be mocked.

Psalm: Psalm 71:9-18

-- The Psalmist, who is up in years, has a track record of God’s mercy to fall back on in his time of need. On the basis of what God has done for him in the past, he is confident about the future as he presents his requests to God.
