1/1/1657 -- The first Quakers arrived in New Amsterdam aboard the ship Woodhouse. Fleeing persecution in Puritan Massachusetts, twelve Quaker missionaries landed on Long Island before several women traveled into New Amsterdam to preach, sparking immediate arrests and banishments by Dutch Governor Peter Stuyvesant.
