A Prayer for the 250th Birthday of the United States by Dr. Donald Registe
Sovereign Lord, may Your glorious name be blessed throughout all the earth. You alone are the Creator and Ruler of all nations. We gladly confess that Your ancient promise to fill the earth with Your infinite glory and to bless humanity will never grow old, nor can it ever be thwarted. It will surely be fulfilled!
Father God, on this 250th birthday of the United States, I thank You for the countless blessings You have graciously lavished upon this great nation. I am deeply grateful to be a citizen of this land. Yet, Father, I also recognize that with such immense privilege comes a great responsibility---to reflect the praise of Your glory, wisdom, and goodness to the rest of the world.
Sovereign Lord, I pray that You would grant the leaders of this nation the wisdom and vision to recognize that it is You who have raised the United States to prominence---not for self-glory, nor to humiliate or mock other nations, but to reflect the praise of Your glory and wisdom back to You and before the nations. May the rulers of this land understand that You are God alone. You have no rival and no equal. Moreover, You show no partiality.
Father, I also humbly confess the sins this nation has committed against You, against its own citizens, and against other nations throughout its 250-year history. We acknowledge that we have often fallen short of Your righteous standards and have not always reflected Your justice, mercy, and truth. Yet You are a God who delights in steadfast love and abundant forgiveness. I pray that You would graciously forgive our sins, heal our land, and guide us in paths of righteousness for Your name's sake.
Father, grant those who serve within the three branches of government the humility to remember that You are the One who raises leaders to positions of authority and that You also bring arrogant rulers to nothing and frustrate those who pervert justice. Remind them that before You, nations are like a drop in a bucket and are regarded as dust on the scales. May they govern with reverence, humility, and accountability before Your throne.
Father, may the leaders of this blessed and beautiful nation lead with humility and integrity. Let them know how greatly You delight in faithfulness, justice, righteousness, and steadfast love---not only in the United States but throughout the whole earth. You are the ultimate Defender of the needy, the fatherless, the widow, and the immigrants who reside within the borders of this great nation. You hold all who exercise authority accountable for how they treat the powerless, and You will ultimately bring every wicked way to ruin.
To You alone belong all praise, honor, and glory forever and ever.
