Today for Recognition Wednesday we are thanking local high school student Alisha. She provided the supplies and inspiration for one of our first products, the recycled heart crayons, and more than that, she brings compassion and energy to encourage our special people to create! Enjoy her answers to the following questions.
Where do you live (city)?
I live in Lake Orion, Michigan.
What first brought you to Safe & Sound/Heartwise Workshoppe, and what made you want to get involved?
During my 9th-grade summer in 2024, I started a nonprofit focused on repurposing crayons as a meaningful way to spend my time and give back to the community. While looking for a place to donate crayons in my community, I came across Heartwise Workshoppe, where I met an amazing group of people working on handcrafted projects! From that day forward, I was not only able to make use of the crayons in meaningful ways, but I was also able to learn so much about the mission that Heartwise promotes.
What’s something about your life or background that shapes the way you serve?
I have a deep connection and passion for the arts, which naturally draws me to opportunities that include that. Whether it’s providing access to art supplies or creating handmade crafts, I love it all! This passion that I have strongly shapes the way that I serve others.
How has serving at Safe & Sound shaped your understanding of dignity or community for special needs adults?
Serving at Safe & Sound has made me understand the importance of supporting and recognizing a community that is often overlooked. There are many misconceptions surrounding special needs adults, but spending time with them completely changed my perspective. I’ve learned that it’s important to treat everyone with respect, kindness, dignity, and overall appreciate them for who they are as individuals.
What’s a simple joy in your life right now?
I have come from a big passion for art, especially with crayons, charcoal, and acrylic paints! And so, when I discovered that many of the workshops include handcrafted projects, I immediately wanted to help out. I could never turn down an opportunity to make art with others!
What would you say to someone who’s thinking about volunteering but feels nervous or unsure?
To anyone who may feel uncertain about volunteering here, I would recommend giving it a chance. I first came into the Workshoppe without knowing anyone and without being part of the church community. However, everyone still welcomed me with their big hearts! Not only are they an amazing group, but they also have such creative craft ideas: Pastor Rochelle has always planned the most fun crafts, and her creativity and excitement always amaze me. Everyone holds one another in high regard, and I truly believe that everyone should come and see how they can make a difference!
Thank you, Heartwise Workshoppe, you have shown me how much positivity a community can bring into someone’s life. I am so incredibly grateful that I came and met you all in the summer of 2024, it became one of the highlights of my year. And a special thanks to Pastor Rochelle.
Thank you Alisha for all the amazing work you with safe and sound. You’re truly a blessing!!! 🙏😊
