The Memorial of Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, Archangels
Feast Day: September 29
Each year on September 29, the Church joyfully celebrates the Feast of the Archangels Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, three great messengers of God whose names and missions are revealed in Sacred Scripture. They are not only servants of the Most High but also protectors, guides, and companions for humanity on its journey of faith.
St. Michael: The Defender
The name Michael means āWho is like God?ā He is remembered as the mighty warrior who leads the heavenly hosts against the powers of evil. The Book of Revelation (12:7ā9) describes him battling the dragon, casting Satan and his angels out of heaven. Michael stands as the guardian of the Church and the defender of souls, reminding us that the true victory belongs to God alone. For centuries, the faithful have prayed to him for protection in times of spiritual warfare.
St. Gabriel: The Messenger of Good News
Gabriel means āStrength of God.ā He appears in both the Old and New Testaments as a bearer of divine messages. In the Gospel of Luke (1:26ā38), Gabriel is sent to announce the greatest news in history: that Mary would conceive and bear a son, Jesus, the Son of God. He also speaks to Zechariah about the birth of John the Baptist (Luke 1:19). Gabriel represents Godās closeness to His people and His desire to communicate love, hope, and salvation.
St. Raphael: The Healer and Guide
The name Raphael means āGod heals.ā He is best known from the Book of Tobit, where he accompanies Tobias on his journey, protects him from harm, and heals Tobitās blindness (Tobit 12:15). Raphael reminds us of Godās tender care for both body and soul, guiding us through lifeās difficulties and restoring us to wholeness in Godās love.
The Significance of the Feast
Together, these three Archangels represent Godās power, presence, and providence:
Michael fights for justice and holiness.
Gabriel proclaims the Word that saves.
Raphael brings healing and guidance.
This feast is also an invitation for Christians to reflect on their own mission. Just as the Archangels are sent to serve Godās will, each believer is called to announce the Good News, defend the truth, and bring healing and peace into the world.
A Prayer to the Archangels
St. Michael, defend us in our battles.
St. Gabriel, bring us Godās message of hope and joy.
St. Raphael, guide and heal us on lifeās journey.
Heavenly messengers, protect us and lead us closer to Christ,
that we may one day rejoice with you in eternal glory. Amen.
⨠On this feast of the Archangels Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, may we entrust ourselves and our families to their protection and intercession, remembering that we are never alone on the path to God.
