I was excited to find a reminder of God's care for us as I was reading in Psalm 52 which referenced I Samuel 21 and pulled me back into our camp theme of David's life...
Remember in I Samuel 16, Samuel anointed David to be the King of Israel after Saul disobeyed God. So David had a right to the throne, and Saul's position was unsettled.
"King Saul spoke to Jonathan his son, and to all his servants, that they should kill David...but Jonathan spoke good of David unto Saul his father, and said unto him, Let not the king sin against his servant, against David...for he slew the Philistine, and the Lord wrought a great salvation for all Israel...and Saul listened to the voice of Jonathan." (I Samuel 19:1,4-6)
But when the evil spirit came on Saul, he tried to kill him with a javelin. Then he plotted to watch and kill him in the morning. David's wife warned him and he fled. Over and over, David's life is threatened by Saul and God rescues David over and over.
In I Samuel 22, (while David is being hunted) David's family, including his father and mother along with the distressed, indebted, and discontented (about 400 total) gathered themselves to David where he was hiding in the cave Adullam. "And David...said to the king of Moab, Let my father and my mother, I pray thee, come forth, and be with you till I know what God will do for me." (vs 3)
Moab?? David had to go from the west side of the Dead Sea to the east side to talk to the king of Moab and secure a safe place for his parents. Could it be because his great grandmother Ruth is from Moab and he is hopeful that he has a friend in Moab?? "And he brought them before the king of Moab: and they dwelt with him all the while that David was in the stronghold."
And what did God do for David?? I was excited to see that God provided care for David's parents, and I've given examples of those who were his allies. In Psalm 52:8-9, David said, "But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God: I trust in the mercy of God for ever and ever. I will praise Thee for ever because Thou hast done it: and I will wait on Thy name; for it is good before Thy saints." He was confident that God would be faithful to him. Read First and Second Samuel and I Kings and most of the Psalms and you will see that God was faithful to David, even when David was not faithful to God.
