Devotional Day 5: Bringing Life to the Dead

When the widow's son died, her world collapsed. But Elijah didn't accept death as the final word. He took the boy to his room, stretched himself over the child three times, and cried out to God. His faith declared that his God was bigger than death itself - and God responded by bringing the boy back to
life.

This was the first recorded resurrection in Scripture, and it happened through an ordinary man who had extraordinary faith in an extraordinary God. Elijah looked at death and said, "I believe my God's bigger than that."

There are spiritually dead people all around us - living next door, working beside us, even in our own families. They may be breathing, but they're dead to hope, dead to purpose, dead to the love of God.

The question is: what do we bring to these desperate and hopeless people? If we want to speak words that bring dead things to life, we must learn to live like Elijah. We need complete commitment to God and total dependence on Him. We need faith that believes God is bigger than any situation we face.

God sees every tear that falls and hears every cry in the night. He's positioned you in the lives of people who need to experience His life-giving power. Through your faith and obedience, God wants to bring resurrection to the dead places around you.

Bible Verse: "Then he cried out to the Lord, 'Lord my God, let this boy's life return to him!' The Lord heard Elijah's cry, and the boy's life returned to him, and he lived." - 1 Kings 17:21-22

Reflection Question: Who in your life needs to experience God's life-giving power, and how can you be a vessel for His resurrection work in their situation?

Quote: He looks at death and he says, I believe my God's bigger than that.

Prayer: Lord, use me to bring Your life and hope to the spiritually dead around me. Give me faith to believe You're bigger than any death I encounter. Amen.

Devotional Day 4: Putting God First

When Elijah arrived at Zarephath, he found a widow preparing her last meal. She had just enough flour and oil for one final meal for herself and her son before they would starve. Yet Elijah asked her to make him a small loaf first, promising that if she put God first, her supplies wouldn't run out.

This widow faced an impossible choice: feed the prophet and trust God, or keep what little she had for herself and her child. Her decision to put God first, even in her desperate circumstances, resulted in miraculous provision that sustained her household throughout the famine.

We face similar choices every day. When resources are tight, relationships are strained, or circumstances seem impossible, will we put God first or rely on our own understanding? The widow's story shows us that when we honor God with our first and best, He provides in ways that defy human logic.

Putting God first doesn't always make sense from a worldly perspective. It requires faith to believe that the God who sees our needs will provide for them. But when we operate out of faith and obedience to God's word, we begin to see Him move in real ways in our lives. God is looking for people who will trust Him enough to put Him first, even when it seems risky. He wants to show His faithfulness through our obedience, just as He did through the widow of Zarephath.

Bible Verse: "She went away and did as Elijah had told her. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family. For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in keeping with the word of the Lord spoken by Elijah." - 1 Kings 17:15-16

Reflection Question: What is God asking you to put Him first in, even though it might seem risky or illogical?

Quote: It's only when we begin to operate out of that spirit of faith and obedience to God's word that we begin to see God move in real ways in our life.

Prayer: God, give me the faith to put You first in every area of my life, trusting that You will provide for my needs according to Your faithfulness. Amen.

Devotional Day 3: Learning to Depend

God sent Elijah to Kerith Ravine - a place of isolation where he had to depend completely on God's provision. Ravens brought him food, and he drank from the brook. It was an unusual arrangement, but it taught Elijah a crucial lesson: total dependence on God.

Many of us are devoted to God, but we're not completely dependent on Him. We love Him, we serve Him, but we still rely heavily on our own abilities, resources, and backup plans. God wants to teach us what He taught Elijah - that true spiritual power comes from complete dependence on Him.

Sometimes God allows our usual sources of provision to dry up, just like the brook at Kerith. This isn't punishment; it's positioning. He's moving us to a place where we must depend on Him alone. These dry seasons can be uncomfortable, but they're essential for our spiritual growth.

The only way to learn dependence is to practice dependence. When we step out in faith, trusting God to provide and guide us, we discover His faithfulness in ways we never could have imagined. Each act of dependence builds our faith for the next challenge. God is still at work in the dry and difficult places of this world. He's using these circumstances to position us where He needs us to be so He can use us for His purposes. Trust Him in the process.

Bible Verse: "Some time later the brook dried up because there had been no rain in the land. Then the word of the Lord came to him: 'Go at once to Zarephath in the region of Sidon and stay there. I have directed a widow there to supply you with food.'" - 1 Kings 17:7-9

Reflection Question: In what areas of your life do you need to move from devotion to complete dependence on God?

Quote: "The only way to learn to depend upon God is to depend on God."

Prayer: Lord, teach me to depend on You completely, not just when my own resources fail. Help me trust Your provision even in the dry seasons. Amen.

Devotional Day 2: The Battle for Our Hearts
Devotional

We live in a world that promises us everything if we'll just bow down and worship at its altars. Success, wealth, status, pleasure - these modern-day Baals whisper the same lies that deceived Israel in Elijah's time. They promise fulfillment and blessing, but they demand our devotion in return.

The spirit of Baal is still alive and well today. Just as the Israelites sacrificed what was holy to gain prosperity, we often sacrifice our integrity, our families, our faith, and our values on the altar of advancement. We compromise what God calls sacred for what the world calls success.

Elijah's name means "my God is Yahweh," and it was a declaration of war against the false gods of his day. In a culture that had forgotten the true God, Elijah stood as a living reminder that there is only one God worthy of our complete devotion.

The same choice faces us today. Will we serve the God who created us and loves us unconditionally, or will we bow to the false promises of this world? The battle for our hearts is real, and it requires us to make a conscious decision about who we will serve.
God is calling us to be like Elijah - people whose very lives declare that our God is the Lord. In a confused and polluted world, we can be beacons of truth pointing others to the only One who truly satisfies.

Bible Verse: "But when they said, 'Give us a king to lead us,' this displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the Lord. And the Lord told him: 'Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king.'" - 1 Samuel 8:6-7

Reflection Question: What modern-day 'Baals' are competing for your devotion, and how can you choose to serve God alone instead?

Quote: How often do we sacrifice what God calls holy? How often do we sacrifice what God calls sacred at the altar of success, of our own prosperity, of our own wealth, of our own progress.

Prayer: “Father, help me recognize the false gods in my life that promise much but deliver emptiness. Give me the courage to choose You alone as my King. Amen.”
