Two Lake Helen boys lost in WWI sinking of the Otranto.

Wade Hubbard, son of John Hubbard and Ludden Baxter, son of Mary Baxter, were serving in WWI on the ship Otranto when it sunk off the coast of Scotland. Though the parents are buried here, both servicemen are buried in Arlington.

As in many small towns, Ludden and Wade were related in a round about way. Ludden’s brother in law and Wade’s sister in law were siblings.

The Hubbards

The Hubbards have deep roots in Lake Helen because of one man, John D. Hubbard. John was the only child of a civil war soldier who died as the result of injuries received in the battle of Fredricksburg while serving in the 8th Florida Confederate Infantry. He was 7 months old when his father died.

John had 16 children with two wives. Seven with his first wife Sarah and nine with his second wife Emma. There are 13 Hubbards in this cemetery, all related to John D. There are still many Hubbards in the area.

The Arnold sisters spent most of their life in the Lake Geneva WI area. They were both musicians and performers. Singing, piano, and acting in local productions. They never married and lived into their 90’s. Gertrude Northcott was another Arnold sister. Gertrude and her husband James are buried next to the Arnold sisters with a large tree in between that is causing both headstones to move.

Moir plot - Robert and Lillian moved to Lake Helen in the 40’s after Robert retired from the NYPD. Richard, their youngest, followed after he left the Navy after WWII. Richard married Lyndall Roberts, daughter of Oscar Roberts. Donald was an engineer and died of stomach cancer in 1954, the same year his father Robert died.

Wirick-the Wirick’s were originally from the Lloyd - Monticello area. May had three children Giroud, James, and John. John was murdered in 1935. James married Mollie Wilkins and she died at 21 in a fire caused by a cook stove, leaving behind a young daughter Mildred. Giroud married Oscar Roberts who was a logger in Lake Helen. May lived to be 101. Her second husband Melvin Goodrich was a machinist and the large front facade of his shop can still be seen behind their house on New York Ave.
