Tomorrow, Wednesday, September 9, our 9 am Bible Class will consider the readings appointed for next Sunday. We'll look especially at Genesis 50:15-21 where Jospeph reassures his troubled brothers that he really has forgiven them. Prof. John Jeske, in his People's Bible Commentary on Genesis writes:
"Chapter 50 is more than just a fascinating page of Old Testament history. It says something crucially important to every human being about the way to solve the problem of sin. Sin is a disruptive factor in human life. Decades after Joseph’s brothers had withheld their love from God and from their brother, the awareness of their sin festered in them like a hidden infection.
But the brothers’ pain was unnecessary. God has provided the solution to the havoc sin raises in our lives. This solution consists of two parts: (1) Confess sin honestly. “He who conceals his sins does not prosper,” God has told us (Proverbs 28:13). A person doesn’t solve the problem of sin by denying it or by excusing it or by trying to cover it up but by taking it to the middle cross on Calvary and asking the Savior to wash it away with his blood. God has taught us to say, “Father, I have sinned.” (2) Believe the offer of forgiveness. Although Joseph had assured his brothers he had forgiven them (45:4–15), they couldn’t bring themselves to believe him. God has promised us that through Christ he has trodden our sins underfoot and hurled our iniquities into the depths of the sea (Micah 7:19). The remembrance of our past sins is painful, but it will be beneficial if it drives us back to the Savior’s repeated offer of forgiveness. God wants us to believe his promise and then live in the joy of his forgiveness."
