Meeting for Worship with Lake Forest Friends

Members and attenders in the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) gather in silence for meeting for worship. Friends believe that each individual can experience God without need of an intermediary. The Divine Spirit within each of us, the Inner Light, strengthened by communal worship, makes the meeting for worship deeply spiritual. This silence is no

t an end in itself. It is an opportunity during which we can open our hearts and minds to God. The silence may be broken occasionally when a worshiper feels divinely inspired to share with the meeting a deeply felt message. It may take the form of a quotation, prayer, or song; it may describe a practical experience; or contain an expression of mystical insight or faith. The silence and the messages are heard in a worshipful spirit. Friends are called to celebrate the presence of God in everyone. The Friends’ way of life, historically rooted in the teachings of Christ, emphasizes simplicity, humility and acceptance of all people, recognizing no boundaries of occupation, race, sexual orientation, or creed. We attempt to live our lives in a manner that takes away the occasion for conflict and war. We work to live in a manner that is in harmony with the natural world. We act in faith that something can and should be done to reduce suffering in this world. Friends believe our individual experiences of the Divine are reflected in our actions. Lake Forest Friends Meeting is open to all. Individuals in this meeting are inspired by a variety of faith traditions and a variety of personal spiritual journeys. We invite you to join us.

May's query is from Illinois Yearly Meeting's Faith and Practice, in the section on the testimony of Integrity: How do my beliefs align with how my life speaks? Do I act with integrity in all my relations with others? How do I reestablish inner unity when there is a conflict between my faith and my practice?

It is the tradition of Lake Forest Friends Meeting to present a query each month. Query for April: 17 Jesus said to her, ‘Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, “I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.” ’ 18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, ‘I have seen the Lord’; and she told them that he had said these things to her.”- John 20: 17-18

In what ways do I cling to my understanding of the Divine over new revelations?

Where do I see resurrection or revival within me? In the Quaker community?

It is the tradition of Lake Forest Friends Meeting to present a query each month.

This month’s query comes from the Welcoming Friends resources of Friends General Conference, a project to ease the way for newcomers into the Meeting community.

Think of a time when you felt welcomed and embraced by an individual or a community. What did welcoming look like? What did being welcomed feel like? How might you offer this welcoming to all in your Meeting, whether they are visitors, newcomers, Zoom attenders, newer Friends or long-time members?

It is the tradition of Lake Forest Friends Meeting to present a query each month.

This month’s query comes from Illinois Yearly Meeting Faith and Practice and was presented by "Michael" Cunningham.

"In searching for a query that might speak to my own concerns navigating the state of the world, I ran a Google search for Quaker+query+despair. It felt like a small blessing that no relevant search hits were returned. Then I tried Quaker+query+hope and this resulted in quite a few hits, but none were what I was looking for. So I abandoned my attempts at a shortcut and sat down with Illinois Yearly Meeting Faith and Practice and started the work, reading queries. There I found a pair of queries that spoke to my condition in the section on Meeting for Worship:

• How can meeting be a source of help when I feel disconnected from the Divine?

• How do I carry the experience of meeting for worship into my daily life?"

It is the tradition of Lake Forest Friends Meeting to present a query each month.

This month’s query comes from the UK Faith and Practice online publication, number 38 in the Advices and Queries section:

If pressure is brought upon you to lower your standard of integrity, are you prepared to resist it? Our responsibilities to God and our neighbour may involve us in taking unpopular stands. Do not let the desire to be sociable, or the fear of seeming peculiar, determine your decisions.

Query for May: What is your prayer?

This query was offered along with the prayer known as "A Franciscan Blessing":
MAY GOD BLESS US with discomfort at easy answers, half-truths, and superficial relationships so that you may live deep within your heart.

May God bless us with anger at injustice, oppression, and exploitation of people, so that you may work for justice, freedom and peace.

May God bless us with tears, to shed for those who suffer pain, rejection, hunger, and war, so that you may reach out your hand to comfort them and to turn their pain to joy.

And may God bless us with enough foolishness to believe that you can make a difference in the world, so that you can do what others claim cannot be done, to bring justice and kindness to all our children and the poor.
