Colossians 3:8-10
“But now is the time to get rid of anger, rage, malicious behavior, slander, and dirty language. 9 Don’t lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its wicked deeds. 10 Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like Him.”

These verses illustrate this spiritual action of transformation as a person who is changing clothes, putting off the sinful nature and then putting on the new nature. This is compared to when Jesus Christ arose from the dead when He left His grave clothes behind (John 20:1-10). Jesus then entered into a new resurrection life and had no need for the grave clothes.

This illustration of our leaving behind the old life and entering into a glorious new life in Christ requires us desiring to walk into this “newness of life.” We do this by reckoning ourselves to be dead to our old life - as an example, the many sins of bad attitudes towards others - and then putting on the newness that comes through our surrender to the Spirit who Christ left to guide us through His indwelling presence. When we placed our trust in Christ for forgiveness and cleansing we then began this amazing renewing of life that only can be fully realized as we allow His Spirit to lead our lives.

The Greek Word for "newness" from the original New Testament text uses two different words which had varying meanings. The word “neos” means “new in time” or the word “kainos” means a “newness in quality.” Sometimes the words were used interchangeably, but yet there is a fundamental difference. In this passage speaking of the "new nature", the Greek word is " neos." It also is defined as being regenerated - we literally instantly become a brand new spiritually regenerated person upon acceptable of Christ's salvation! As believers in Christ we are to put on the “new man”, and, as a consequence, become being renewed, "kainos." There is a change as we become like Christ.

In the very beginning of mankind, we were formed and as sin came into the world through Adam we became deformed but once Christ came we were given the opportunity to be transformed into God’s image. This is lived out as a process of constant renewal taking place as we allow the Spirit to take His Word and masterfully change (transform) us (our desires).

SO GO WITH GOD, and allow Him through the Spirit's leading to transform your life moment by moment. He alone is able to bring this supernatural change in you as yield your will to Him and then direct your life walk to be obedient to His ways. Oh, you may be His child but you may not be living out your full inherited experience in Christ! So seek to live out this heavenly calling in Christ. Permit the Spirit to renew your mind and heart in order that you become transformed into His image!

Colossians 3:5-7
“So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immortality, impurity, lust, and evil desires. Don’t be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world. 6 Because of these sins, the anger of God is coming. You used to do these things when your life was still part of this world.”

This Scripture is saying put to death earthly things and no longer let them be our guiding force. If we place our thoughts and acts primarily on the things of this age, we will invest only in this life and fail to place any treasures towards eternity. And, my friend, eternal things are what count for...well, for eternity!

One of the ways to help us invest in the kingdom of God is to invest our time in service to our Savior. The second way we invest in Heaven is through experiencing trials in this life. Have you noticed how sometimes our trials keep us homesick for Heaven? Without these earthly trials, we would remain bound up on the things of this earth and could easily fail to set up treasures in Heaven. A third way that the Lord helps us to set our hearts and minds on things above is through “transfers.” This is when the people we love precede us into Heaven. So you can see that treasure, trials, and transfers are three ways that our hearts can be set on things above. We may find ourselves gradually living more and more with Heaven in view.

These verses today are warning us of the tendency to live for the wrong things. Putting to death earthly desires brings life in Christ even more clearly into focus. Yesterday in Scripture, we were reminded of the importance of living for eternity in “the new life” and today we have been warned to put the "old life" and its earthly temptations to death. Why do you think that these things are brought before us in Scripture? Yes, that is right...because the pleasures on this life have the tendency to blind us or dim our thoughts of eternity. “So put these earthly things to death.”

SO GO WITH GOD and let go of the temporal things of this life. Oh, I’m not telling you to just forget it all! I’m encouraging you to keep all of these things in balance. For in all reality, these earthly things just like our natural appearance and abilities and are all slowly going away from us anyway. Look in the mirror, my friend. Is your youthful appearance continuing to blossom and grow? Or is it slowly diminishing and requiring more and more attention to remain in a less aged, weakened state or appearance? Verse 2 warns us to “Think about the things of heaven.” Then verses 5-7 are telling us to “put to death our earthly desires… “ seek to live with eternity values in view. This is your Christian legacy for those who follow behind you.

Colossians 3:3, 4
“For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 And when Christ, who is your life, is revealed to the whole world, you will share in all His glory.”

This is a hard concept to comprehend isn’t it? We are dead and alive at the same time - dead to sin and alive in Christ. It has been said, “Life is what you are alive to.” A child comes alive when you talk about ice-cream or video games, while a teen may come alive when you mention cars or dates. A pregnant mother is alive to proper preparation for her baby. The Apostle Paul, from his enlightening/blinding experience on the road to Damascus, then came alive to Christ and His salvation experience.

Here is the age old question, “Is it possible to be alive and yet dead?” In the spiritual sense, the answer is "yes" in that we no longer belong to this world and the things that bring deep, fulfilling joy are found only when they are in harmony with Christ’s will, and we are dead spiritually to this worldly planet for fulfillment. Oh, we still enjoy eating food, going to the ball game or fishing, but when these activities come in conflict with Christ’s will, we willingly set them aside. You see, the Christian life is a “hidden life” as far as the world is concerned, because they don’t know Him (1 John 4:1-6). Our sphere in this life doesn’t any longer revolve around earthly attractions. Instead, we are drawn to spiritual concerns. Yes, we still work, eat, sleep, etc, but they are no longer the driving force in our lives.

We read yesterday in Colossians 3:1, 2 where it says, “Set your sights on the realities of heaven.” 2 “Think about the things of heaven.” Where we stand and walk depends on where we SIT. It is just as Israel halted from entering the promised land due to where they stood, Were they willing to believe God for victory in the land, or were they going to wander in the wilderness for forty years? They unfortunately chose living in the world apart from God’s deliverance. So, just as the President has privileges and powers because he has been selected to that position, in the same way we are able to enjoy life in the heavenlies. This is true, as long as we keep our hearts and minds directed to our new life in Christ.

SO GO WITH GOD, my child of the King. Live in the power of Our Heavenly Father, and “share in all of His glory.” It is yours to live, if you will only walk in this new way of life. I encourage to listen to the song on YouTube by Gaither Vocal Band “I’m a Child of the King.” We’ve been washed in His blood, so why not walk as His child?

Colossians 3:1, 2
“Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand. 2 Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth.”

Have you noticed that the only people on this earth who are totally happy are those whose hearts are focused on heaven? You see, the power of Christ in our life does more than restrain the desires of our flesh and the world. As we look to His ways, He puts new desires in our hearts that match His perfect will for us and thus fulfill us.
In all reality, “Nature determines appetite.” Human nature leads to human desires. Peter put it this way in 2 Peter 1:4: “And because of His glory and excellence, He has given us great and precious promises. These are promises that enable you to share His divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires.”

As we fellowship with Christ through worship, meditating on the Word of God ( the Bible), and communing with Him through prayer, we receive His Spirit's power needed for daily experiencing His full measure of grace. When Christ is preeminent, we are drawing on His power rather than depending on some man-made “substitute.” When we are walking in the power of His Spirit, we are no longer chained to this world’s sinful condition. Paul put it this way in Romans 6:5-8: “Since we have been united with Him in His death, we will also be raised to life as He was … as we were crucified with Christ … We are set free free from the power of sin. …we are no longer slaves sin.”

SO WALK WITH GOD, and live as champions of Christ. The rock group Queen got this one wrong, for without us making Christ our Savior and King we cannot be champions. However, upon our surrender to His will, with Him at the helm of our lives, WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD. Those in our world need us to guide them to FREEDOM IN CHRIST.

Colossians 2:20-23
“You have died with Christ, and He has set you free from the spiritual powers of this world. So why do you keep on following the rules of the world, such as, 21 'Don’t handle! Don’t taste! Don’t touch!' ? 22 Such rules are mere human teachings about things that deteriorate as we use them. 23 These rules may seem wise because they require strong devoition, pious self-denial, and severe bodily discipline. But they provide no help in conquering a person’s evil desires.”

Human-made religion attempts to set our focus on the things of this world such as what we do or what we don’t do. However, God tells us that our spiritual freedom from the world, flesh, and the devil is due to Christ’s work on the cross, not on the things we do or refuse to do.

It is natural for us to look to our own actions as to our level of spiritual growth and development. However, these disciplines are prone to diminish in value or limit our ability in conquering the natural human desires that are so prominent in humankind. We must focus our purposes in life upon following Christ, setting aside the worldly mindset, and focusing our purposes on allowing the Spirit to lead and guide us in how we can best follow Christ.

Remember these words of Colossians 2:9,10: “For in Christ lives the fullness of God in a human body. So you also are complete through your union with Christ …” We will learn more about this call we have to “live the new life” tomorrow.

SO GO WITH GOD for He alone makes us complete. Outside of our surrender and obedience to Him, we will fail to acheive spiritual communion with our Savior and Lord. So keep focused on Him, “The author and finisher of our faith.” Hebrews 12:2

Colossians 2:18,19
“Don’t let anyone condemn you by insisting on pious self-denial or the worship of angels, saying they have had visions about these things. Their sinful minds have made them proud, 19 and they are not connected to Christ, the head of the body. For He holds the whole body together with its joints and ligaments, and it grows as God nourishes it.”

It is important to remember that our salvation is sure because it is based on Christ’s death, not based on anything we might do. In fact, true worship always humbles us rather than lifting us up in pride. 1 Corinthians 8:1 says, “Knowledge puffs up but love builds up.” As we are drawn to Christ through our understanding of the Scriptures, we become continually more humble and meek. We see this came true with Job in Job 42:5, 6 when he met God in all His glory. We see it also with Peter in Luke 5:8 where he realized his sinful condition in relationship to Christ. The prophet Isaiah in Isaiah 6 humbly described when "The Lord filled temple with His presence with all of His glory." It is also seen in Revelation 1:17 when John saw “The Risen Christ”, “The First and the Last.”

All of us believers, as we are drawn to the renewal that comes from Christ, are overwhelmed with His very presence. We then come to realize that it is through our communion with the Lord that we come into a deeper fellowship with Him. Through our yielding to the Spirit who lives in us and our obeying of His voice found in the Word which we are often drawn to, it is then that we experience His Headship.

SO GO WITH GOD and bask in His presence during each day. He promises a fruitfullness and blessing as we walk in fellowship with Him. As we abide in His truths and commune with Him, we will naturally experience the blessing and fruitfulness that comes to us as we relate to Him as the Head. It is just as the song states in truth “Blessed be the name of the Lord.” Matt Redman declares this truth in His YouTube song “Blessed be your name.” As we choose to declare His glory daily, we can’t help but delight in His presence.

Colossians 2:16,17
“So don’t let anyone condemn you for what you eat or drink, or for not celebrating certain holy days or new moon ceremonies or Sabbaths. 17 For these rules are only shadows of the reality yet to come. And Christ himself is the reality.”

Think about three great victories we experience through Christ’s death on the cross. First, “Christ disarmed the powers and authorities” that Satan attempts to hold over our lives. Second, Jesus exposed Satan’s defeat through His death, resurrection and ascension. Third, we are soon going to be made victorious through Christ’s triumphal entry upon His return to the earth.

As Christians, you and I share in Jesus' victory over the devil. We need not fear Satan’s influence any longer for Christ has won every battle for us! Ephesians 6:10 tells us of this victory, “A final word; Be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.” We are made free from the human forces that Satan attempts to use to hold us in bo***ge. No more can legalistic rules, regulations, and ordinances rule in our lives. We are free through Christ’s fulfillment of these past Old Testament requirements. He became the final solution for sin as the sacrificial Lamb of God.

SO GO WITH GOD, for He sent His SON to once for all bring His enlightenment and reality to you. As a believer, you stand in Him complete.

Colossians 2:15
“In this way [Christ’s payment for our sin], He disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by His victory over them on the cross.”

In this verse Paul is referring to the way that the Romans celebrated over their warring enemies. Upon the defeat of their enemies, they would remove all of their enemies' armament, and then they would chain these defeated warriors together and parade them through the capitol city to demonstrate the shame of their defeat. Paul is comparing the victory that we have been provided from sin through Christ to the freedom that we can now enjoy.

Christ’s victory over sin, death, and hell has brought to us freedom from sin and the victory of salvation. Our sin has been washed away through Christ’s saving work, and Satan no longer has uncontrolled influence in our lives. The powers of darkness are rendered powerless through Christ. Realize that Satan and his demons are only made powerless in our lives when we stand up in the power of Christ and declare ourselves free through the Son of God’s saving, cleansing work for us. We have all that we need in Christ. Beware of substitutes!!!

SO GO WITH GOD, for He has paid the penalty for our sin and made us FREE IN CHRIST!!! So declare the VICTORY that you have been given in Christ over all of the world’s evils. We are no longer to live under the circumstances, but but living in the power of the SON.
