Does Hebrews 10:26 warn believers, or unbelievers?
Some argue that this passage cannot be speaking to Christians because "true believers can never fall away." But the text itself raises some important questions:
The author says, "If WE sin willfully..." (Hebrews 10:26), including himself in the warning.
Hebrews 10:29 describes those being warned as people who have been "sanctified" by the blood of Christ.
These details suggest that the warning is directed toward those who have genuinely experienced God's saving work and are being cautioned against turning back into deliberate, persistent sin.
The purpose of biblical warnings is not to make us fearful, but to encourage us to persevere in faith and holiness.
What do you think Hebrews 10:26-29 is teaching?
