Essence
Mercy, grace, and loving kindness are the essence of God, and Jesus is the face of God in our midst. The recognition of that will make us bold to approach Jesus in our need, in faith that He will provide for us, heal us, and love us, giving us the capacity to see in ourselves these same attributes.

Good News
God sent Jesus into the world at Christmas to share what it is to be human: to experience in his body the terrible and hurtful and sinful things that we can do to each other – and yet to carry on loving us, forgiving us, and redeeming us. However bad the bad news is, the Good News is better, stronger. The Good News will always triumph.

Fight
The feast of the Holy Innocents is a reminder that we fight the same fight Jesus was born into. The fight against evil is a good fight, a timeless fight. Like Jesus, we fight with our hearts and minds, our prayers, our love, our vows, and our will. We enlist with our baptismal covenant and are reinforced daily by the communion of saints and the power of the Holy Spirit.

We draw near to the infant of Bethlehem in the darkest time so that we may receive him alone as our Light. We draw near to his shivering and impoverished parents because we need, again and again, to see a glory purged of worldly self-reliance, triumphant materialism, and the will to power. Our beholding of his face teaches us to see by a light the world cannot see. What can we do to offer more of this Light?

Like Mary, we too have been chosen by God from the foundation of the world to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last for all eternity. Think of it! You have not been chosen randomly, or by happenstance, but particularly and eternally, to bear fruit for God.

What frightens you? What seems too big? God is bigger and will come, bringing peace. God comes in a multitude of ways - some that makes no sense. God comes with love.

There are, to be sure, times when it is difficult to see light in the face of overwhelming darkness and evil, but as the Gospel of John assures us, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it." In the end, darkness cannot extinguish the light of God. People of faith know this to be true.
