“To You I lift up my eyes, O You who are enthroned in the heavens! Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, As the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress, So our eyes look to the Lord our God, Until He is gracious to us. Be gracious to us, O Lord, be gracious to us, For we are greatly filled with contempt. Our soul is greatly filled With the scoffing of those who are at ease, And with the contempt of the proud.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭123‬:‭1‬-‭4‬

““Had it not been the Lord who was on our side,” Let Israel now say, “Had it not been the Lord who was on our side When men rose up against us, Then they would have swallowed us alive, When their anger was kindled against us; Then the waters would have engulfed us, The stream would have swept over our soul; Then the raging waters would have swept over our soul.” Blessed be the Lord, Who has not given us to be torn by their teeth. Our soul has escaped as a bird out of the snare of the trapper; The snare is broken and we have escaped. Our help is in the name of the Lord, Who made heaven and earth.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭124‬:‭1‬-‭8‬

“Some boast in chariots and some in horses, But we will boast in the name of the Lord, our God.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭20‬:‭7‬

~ Where will you look for help and salvation? You may be on top of the world right now, or you may be at the bottom of the barrel…but some day you will come to the end of it all. You will be helpless to preserve your life and strength, and no one else will be able to help you either. It could happen today or tomorrow or sometime in the future, but it will happen, and when it does destruction will take you unless you are found in the Lord Jesus Christ - “looking” to Him.

“Turn to Me and be saved, all the ends of the earth; For I am God, and there is no other. I have sworn by Myself, The word has gone forth from My mouth in righteousness And will not turn back, That to Me every knee will bow, every tongue will swear allegiance. They will say of Me, ‘Only in the Lord are righteousness and strength.’ Men will come to Him, And all who were angry at Him will be put to shame. In the Lord all the offspring of Israel Will be justified and will glory.””
‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭45‬:‭22‬-‭25‬
I love you.

““Shout for joy, O barren one, you who have borne no child; Break forth into joyful shouting and cry aloud, you who have not travailed; For the sons of the desolate one will be more numerous Than the sons of the married woman,” says the Lord. “Enlarge the place of your tent; Stretch out the curtains of your dwellings, spare not; Lengthen your cords And strengthen your pegs. For you will spread abroad to the right and to the left. And your descendants will possess nations And will resettle the desolate cities. “Fear not, for you will not be put to shame; And do not feel humiliated, for you will not be disgraced; But you will forget the shame of your youth, And the reproach of your widowhood you will remember no more. For your husband is your Maker, Whose name is the Lord of hosts; And your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel, Who is called the God of all the earth. For the Lord has called you, Like a wife forsaken and grieved in spirit, Even like a wife of one’s youth when she is rejected,” Says your God. “For a brief moment I forsook you, But with great compassion I will gather you. In an outburst of anger I hid My face from you for a moment, But with everlasting lovingkindness I will have compassion on you,” Says the Lord your Redeemer. “For this is like the days of Noah to Me, When I swore that the waters of Noah Would not flood the earth again; So I have sworn that I will not be angry with you Nor will I rebuke you. For the mountains may be removed and the hills may shake, But My lovingkindness will not be removed from you, And My covenant of peace will not be shaken,” Says the Lord who has compassion on you. “O afflicted one, storm-tossed, and not comforted, Behold, I will set your stones in antimony, And your foundations I will lay in sapphires. Moreover, I will make your battlements of rubies, And your gates of crystal, And your entire wall of precious stones. All your sons will be taught of the Lord; And the well-being of your sons will be great. In righteousness you will be established; You will be far from oppression, for you will not fear; And from terror, for it will not come near you. If anyone fiercely assails you it will not be from Me. Whoever assails you will fall because of you. Behold, I Myself have created the smith who blows the fire of coals And brings out a weapon for its work; And I have created the destroyer to ruin. No weapon that is formed against you will prosper; And every tongue that accuses you in judgment you will condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, And their vindication is from Me,” declares the Lord.” Isaiah‬ ‭54‬:‭1‬-‭17‬

~ The context for the prophecy of Isaiah 54 is the city of Jerusalem during the Babylonian captivity. Because of their unfaithfulness to God - because of sin…the city and temple have been destroyed, and the people are living in captivity in Babylon. However, God promises to one day redeem, restore, vindicate, and exalt them and basically give them the whole world.
In Galatians 4:27 the apostle Paul quotes Isaiah 54:1 and the promise of this prophecy as being fulfilled in the New Jerusalem - the Church. And he says that we (people of EVERY nation, tribe, and tongue who believe in Jesus) are the “children” of the New Jerusalem. Think about the spiritual condition of the world. God created it perfect, but because of the unfaithfulness of humanity, it is currently in shambles…just like Jerusalem during the Babylonian captivity. Death and decay reign over the entire created order, and God’s people are held captive in “Babylon” - separated from God.
Paul says that promise of Isaiah 54 is fulfilled in Christ through the gospel of His kingdom. Those who trust in Jesus the Messiah are restored and reconciled to God and each other in Him! If you will be reconciled to God through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ the promise of Isaiah 54 is for you! What the fulfillment of this promise looks like is described as follows:

“And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren; and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified. What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things? Who will bring a charge against God’s elect? God is the one who justifies; who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us. Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? Just as it is written, “For Your sake we are being put to death all day long; We were considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭28‬-‭39‬

I love you.

“Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help And rely on horses, And trust in chariots because they are many And in horsemen because they are very strong, But they do not look to the Holy One of Israel, nor seek the Lord! Yet He also is wise and will bring disaster And does not retract His words, But will arise against the house of evildoers And against the help of the workers of iniquity. Now the Egyptians are men and not God, And their horses are flesh and not spirit; So the Lord will stretch out His hand, And he who helps will stumble And he who is helped will fall, And all of them will come to an end together. For thus says the Lord to me, “As the lion or the young lion growls over his prey, Against which a band of shepherds is called out, And he will not be terrified at their voice nor disturbed at their noise, So will the Lord of hosts come down to wage war on Mount Zion and on its hill.” Like flying birds so the Lord of hosts will protect Jerusalem. He will protect and deliver it; He will pass over and rescue it. Return to Him from whom you have deeply defected, O sons of Israel. For in that day every man will cast away his silver idols and his gold idols, which your sinful hands have made for you as a sin. And the Assyrian will fall by a sword not of man, And a sword not of man will devour him. So he will not escape the sword, And his young men will become forced laborers.” Isaiah‬ ‭31‬:‭1‬-‭8

~ In this text the Lord is warning the people of Judah not to look for help and salvation from this world - from Egypt. In verse three He gives the reason why the “sons of Israel” should look to Him for help instead of looking to Egypt. “The Egyptians are men and not God, and their horses are flesh and not Spirit…”
Five chapters later in Isaiah 36, Sennacherib, king of Assyria is going to invade Judah and surround Jerusalem with a large army. He’s going to issue an ultimatum to King Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, “Surrender or be destroyed…and don’t think Egypt is going to help you.”
Hezekiah has to make a choice. Will Jerusalem fall to her enemies? Will she depend on the carnal weapons of Egypt for salvation, or will she entrust herself to the Lord. Hezekiah humbled himself and prayed to the Lord for deliverance, and the Lord sent His angel to destroy the Assyrian army.
This really happened…but it wasn’t the ultimate fulfillment of Isaiah 31. All of the promises of God find their “yes” in Christ. God’s people living in this world are surrounded by the army of our enemy. Death is inevitable. We can surrender to it. We can resist it as long as possible using fleshly means (the horses of Egypt), or we can humble ourselves and trust in the Lord.
He will slay our enemies with a sword that is not of man. Revelation 19 pictures the Lord Jesus riding forth from heaven with a “sword” coming out of His mouth and slaying His enemies with it. In Ephesians 6:17 the apostle Paul refers to the Scriptures as the “sword of the Spirit,” and by planting His sword in our hearts Jesus slays His enemies and delivers His people unto eternal life. “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.” John‬ ‭6‬:‭63

“The steadfast of mind You will keep in perfect peace, Because he trusts in You. Trust in the Lord forever, For in God the Lord, we have an everlasting Rock. For He has brought low those who dwell on high, the unassailable city; He lays it low, He lays it low to the ground, He casts it to the dust. The foot will trample it, The feet of the afflicted, the steps of the helpless.” The way of the righteous is smooth; O Upright One, make the path of the righteous level. Indeed, while following the way of Your judgments, O Lord, We have waited for You eagerly; Your name, even Your memory, is the desire of our souls. At night my soul longs for You, Indeed, my spirit within me seeks You diligently; For when the earth experiences Your judgments The inhabitants of the world learn righteousness. Though the wicked is shown favor, He does not learn righteousness; He deals unjustly in the land of uprightness, And does not perceive the majesty of the Lord. O Lord, Your hand is lifted up yet they do not see it. They see Your zeal for the people and are put to shame; Indeed, fire will devour Your enemies. Lord, You will establish peace for us, Since You have also performed for us all our works.” Isaiah‬ ‭26‬:‭3‬-‭12‬

“For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.” Ephesians‬ ‭2‬:‭8‬-‭10‬

~ We are free to “seize the day” because God in Christ has ALREADY trod the path for us! Trust in Him. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight.” Proverbs‬ ‭3‬:‭5‬-‭6‬ I love you!
