🥫 Today is National Food Bank Day!

Behind every meal served is a story: a family facing hard times, a senior stretching a fixed income, a neighbor just trying to make it through the week. The Salvation Army's food pantries exist to meet that need, one meal, one family, one act of compassion at a time.

Food banks and pantries don't run on hope alone, they run on community. Every donation, every volunteer hour, every can on the shelf makes a difference for someone facing an empty cupboard.

Today is Thankful Thursday! Have you thanked someone for being there for them in time of crisis or even being there for comfort. Today at The Salvation Army of Lake Charles Louisiana - serving SW Louisiana we want to give a shout out to all those that give to help our Mission move forward.

Dear Friends and Supporters of The Salvation Army,
On behalf of everyone at The Salvation Army, we want to extend our heartfelt gratitude for your faithful financial support. Whether you give weekly, monthly, yearly, or through a special gift, your generosity makes a lasting difference in the lives of individuals and families throughout our community.
Because of your compassion and commitment, we are able to offer hope and practical assistance to those facing difficult circumstances. Your donations help support our Center of Hope program, provide daily evening meals for those experiencing hunger, assist families with utility and rental needs when funding is available, and enable us to respond through our Emergency Disaster Services when crises occur.

What a great opportunity to spend time with the Volunteers of America South Central Louisiana and hearing about the programs that we can partner with them on. Did you know that The Salvation Army in Lake Charles has been sharing the hope of Jesus for well over a century?
Our Corps first "opened fire" in 1903 and was officially listed in The Salvation Army Southern Territory's Disposition of Forces in January 1904. Since then, The Salvation Army has been a faithful presence in Lake Charles, conducting countless meetings, outreaches, and ministries that have pointed people to Christ.
One memorable chapter in our history took place November 7-9, 1908, when a well-known Salvation Army officer known as "Joe the Turk" visited Lake Charles. The Lake Charles Daily Press reported:
"Joe has had a long experience as a Salvation Army Officer. He was converted in San Francisco 24 years ago and has traveled in the interest of the Salvation Army in almost every part of the United States, also England, France, Greece and Asia. He will speak on a different subject each night."
The article went on to note that Joe was a gifted musician, playing the cornet, saxophone, clarinet, and zonophone, and that he wore a full Turkish costume during his appearances. Large crowds attended both his indoor meetings and his open-air gatherings at the Calcasieu Bank corner.
More than 118 years later, we are inspired by the passion of those early Salvationists who boldly shared the Gospel in our community. As we reflect on their legacy, may we continue their mission: telling others about Jesus Christ and His amazing grace throughout Lake Charles and beyond.
