Ephesians 6:10-17: Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Stand firm therefore, HAVING GIRDED YOUR LOINS WITH TRUTH, and HAVING PUT ON THE BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, and having shod YOUR FEET WITH THE PREPARATION OF THE GOSPEL OF PEACE; in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. And take THE HELMET OF SALVATION, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Proper prior preparation prevents poor performance. However, preparation will only take us so far; we must then act. Many face defeat because they weren’t prepared. For Christians, the most vital preparation we can make begins with our relationship with God. We must trust Him and seek His will in all things.

When we are prepared for what ever the evil one may throw our way, doubt and fear are minimized. They are replaced with confidence in God as He leads and blesses us. Ready your minds for action and put God’s principles into action. Pray about every situation you face, seek God’s strength and wisdom. Trust Him.

Proverbs 3:19-22: The LORD by wisdom founded the earth, By understanding He established the heavens. By His knowledge the deeps were broken up And the skies drip with dew. My son, let them not vanish from your sight; Keep sound wisdom and discretion, So they will be life to your soul And adornment to your neck.
It sounds so easy, yet when the chips are down it is more difficult than we thought. Using wisdom and discretion are a valuable part of what makes up God’s people. I have said that knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit, wisdom is not putting in the fruit salad. This is all a part of discretion – being able to make intelligent choices in everyday decisions.
Of course, we make it more difficult when we remove God from the equation. If we lean on Him and His guidance it is easier to make wise decisions in our lives. Be committed to seeking God’s guidance in everything and we will be less likely to act like a fool!

Psalm 73:21-25: When my heart was embittered And I was pierced within, Then I was senseless and ignorant; I was like a beast before You. Nevertheless I am continually with You; You have taken hold of my right hand. With Your counsel You will guide me, And afterward receive me to glory. Whom have I in heaven but You? And besides You, I desire nothing on earth.
Many of us have felt wounded by what others have said or done. While going through these experiences, we can complain, sulk or become bitter. Bitterness is poison to the soul; it affects our attitudes and even our health.
The answer to bitterness like this is to focus on God. Seek Him, declare our faith in Him. People can and will disappoint but God never does. Focusing on Him, instead on what others do, leads us to healing and a greater purpose. Don’t allow your heart to be dominated by bitterness. Turn to God.

Psalm 103:10-13: He has not dealt with us according to our sins, Nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, So great is His lovingkindness toward those who fear Him. As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us. Just as a father has compassion on his children, So the LORD has compassion on those who fear Him.

Psalm 103 is about how good God is in His dealings with humanity. The psalmist tells us God is righteous, a redeemer, satisfier, compassionate, gracious, and full of lovingkindness. He pardons and heals and does not deal with us according to our sins. Because of all these things that He is and does, He has put His people in a position of victory.

Why then do we allow problems to dominate and foster an attitude of defeat within us? God never changes and how He deals with His people has been consistent. Due to this, He is worthy of praise in all we experience and do. It is God’s character that we build on in our lives and it is His actions that bring us victory.

Hebrews 10:23-25: Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.

Every day brings us closer to the realization of Jesus’s return. While we wait, one of our purposes is to be actively engaged with one another. Stimulating each other to continue doing what we are supposed to do. It is impossible to do this alone, we need to be around each other in order to accomplish this.

Taking the attitude that we can do it on our own goes against what the Scriptures are teaching. This is because when we adopt that attitude, we then think we no longer need each other and we leave behind meeting with God fearing people. Our assemblies are important. In them we are able to accomplish all this verse is calling us to do.

Matthew 6:14, 15: “For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. “But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions.

Jesus came to this earth so that we could have a relationship with God and each other. One of the biggest hinderances to relationships is holding a grudge. We say, “I can never forgive them for what they have done”. If that is the attitude we take in our approach to dealing with one another we have missed several things. First, we have missed the lesson God was teaching in the sacrifice of His Son. Second, we have missed the fact that Jesus says our forgiveness is dependent on how we forgive.

Life is too short and relationships too important to not be a forgiving people. If we are being honest, we realize that what ever slight or sin someone has committed against us in nothing in comparison to what we have done to God. Any anger we feel because of it is insignificant when compared to the anger God feels. Yet, He overcame that anger in Jesus. That is how far God is willing to go to have a relationship. Do we have the same attitude?

1 Peter 3:13-16: Who is there to harm you if you prove zealous for what is good? But even if you should suffer for the sake of righteousness, you are blessed. AND DO NOT FEAR THEIR INTIMIDATION, AND DO NOT BE TROUBLED, but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence; and keep a good conscience so that in the thing in which you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame.

Sadly, intimidation is a standard tactic of those who would see us live in fear. If we can be bullied into a life of being afraid, then we are no longer effective in our calling. The point Peter is making is not that fear should never be a part of our lives; but that we should not be afraid of what people tell us to be afraid of.

When we set Christ apart as Lord in our hearts, fear and intimidation from the world take a back seat and we are ready to live as Christ has called to live. Notice, that doesn’t remove mistreatment, harm, and suffering. If we are to suffer, let it be because we because Christ is Lord – in all aspects of our lives! That is what allows our conscience to be clean and our behavior to be gentle and respectful.

Philippians 2:14-16: Do all things without grumbling or disputing; so that you will prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I will have reason to glory because I did not run in vain nor toil in vain.

Have you ever noticed how easy it is to complain and complain? There various ways we do it but usually the root cause is that we didn’t get our way or someone didn’t something the way we would have done it. This type of attitude is counter productive to God’s purpose for His people. He has called us to be lights in the world – to guide and help those in darkness.

Grumbling and disputing is a common practice among people. Living above reproach is uncommon. We only accomplish peace and unity when we allow the Spirit of the One who saved us to have a direct influence on every part of our lives. The question for us is: Are we common or uncommon?

Ecclesiastes 11:1-8: Cast your bread on the surface of the waters, for you will find it after many days. Divide your portion to seven, or even to eight, for you do not know what misfortune may occur on the earth. If the clouds are full, they pour out rain upon the earth; and whether a tree falls toward the south or toward the north, wherever the tree falls, there it lies. He who watches the wind will not sow and he who looks at the clouds will not reap. Just as you do not know the path of the wind and how bones are formed in the womb of the pregnant woman, so you do not know the activity of God who makes all things. Sow your seed in the morning and do not be idle in the evening, for you do not know whether morning or evening sowing will succeed, or whether both of them alike will be good. The light is pleasant, and it is good for the eyes to see the sun. Indeed, if a man should live many years, let him rejoice in them all, and let him remember the days of darkness, for they will be many. Everything that is to come will be futility.

The fact of the matter is that wisdom should guide us in all that we do. One failure does not make us a fool (habitual behavior does though). What is great about this portion of the text is that the preacher tells us that acting wisely is not some grand and lofty thing that can’t be attained by the regular folks. Wisdom is simply paying attention and acting on the truth that is right in front of us.

Since no one knows what is coming tomorrow, prepare yourselves today. If you are willing to use a smidgen of wisdom you can be prepared for whatever might come in the future. While we may seem like there is more failure than success in the grand scheme of things it doesn’t matter. For those who act on wisdom there is always a reason to rejoice even when failure has happened. Because we are operating of the basic truth that God is working all the time.

Ecclesiastes 10:12, 13: Words from the mouth of a wise man are gracious, while the lips of a fool consume him; the beginning of his talking is folly and the end of it is wicked madness.

In chapter 10, the preacher doesn’t specifically outline the definition of what a fool is. He gives us common sense scenarios to show us what a fool does. He presents to us the concept of looking before you leap (which the fool never does). Instead, the wise think about what they are getting into before they get into it. This type of wise behavior is extremely unpopular. It goes against our selfish impulsive nature and denies us what we think we want. Therefore, men despise wisdom and are content to waste their time delving into what the preacher calls wicked madness. (vs. 13)

Wicked madness is the only outcome of the fool. What is sad is that men seem content to waste the days and opportunities God has provided. They would rather act the fool than to behave as one who is wise. Man lives in a constant state of frustration because they are wearing themselves out fighting against the truth that is staring them in the face.
