Although Obon has passed in most parts of Japan, celebrations continue from June through to the end of August in Hawaii. Every weekend, a Bon dance is held at one temple or another across the Hawaiian islands to honour the spirits of ancestors.

Hawaii has a long history of Japanese immigration, dating back to the Meiji era (1868–1912) when the sugar cane industry had reached the height of its prosperity. In 2018, Hawaii commemorated the 150th anniversary of Japanese immigration.

Today, the Bon dance brought over by Japanese immigrants from their homeland is firmly established as a summer tradition in Hawaii.
