"Co-Creating Liberation with a Womanist Mind"
As the United States enters the 250th year of its colonial project, and the current waves of oppression of our communities intensify, we are mandated by Unitarian Universalism’s call to love, imagine, and create the world we need, louder. A tool, an orientation for the journey, could be a womanist dancing mind.

LJ Williams (they/she) is a q***r African and Jewish writer and theologian, pursuing Masters of both Divinity and Social Change, as well as certificates of Psychedelic Chaplaincy and UU Studies from Starr King School of the Ministry. They served as a coordinator of the Black Lives of Unitarian Universalism Chicago Haven. They were a Worship Learning Fellow at the Church of the Larger Fellowship, and now serves as Broadcast Producer. In 2025 they received a Sacred Writes Fellowship for Public Scholarship in gender and religion.

"A PRIDE COAT OF MANY COLORS"
Today we celebrate LGBTQIA Pride! When Joseph bestowed a coat of many colors on Jacob, what he was really bestowing was a spiritual power that none could take away. When Gilbert Baker fathered the Rainbow Pride flag in 1978, he had a vision of many people with different identities all coming together in unity and strength. He saw different marginalized communities united under one "coat of many colors." The number of stripes in color got smaller for several years, then it blossomed with many new variations, but it still represented the spiritual power of coming together in kinship and celebration as one unified community. Throughout history, many Unitarian Universalist fathers have passed on spiritual power to their children. Let us consider to whom we shall pass our Rainbow Flag of power to.

Rev. Ayliah has been ordained in a Druid tradition since 2011, and has served Unitarian Universalist congregations for the past twelve years, leading worship services on a variety of topics at churches across Florida and Delaware where she currently resides with her partner Jamey, of 13 years, one dog, and two cats. She has taught workshops on many pagan and non-pagan areas of interest and enjoys singing and competitive ballroom dancing. In 2025, when the country started facing renewed threats of oppression, she enrolled at Starr King Seminary School so she could be credentialed as a UU minister and better serve communities in need.

"Gaia, Mother Earth and the Oneness of Everything"

Jim intersperses original songs and readings with his personal reflections on a spiritual ecological awareness. The idea of Mother Earth or "Gaia" being a living organism with the same physical attributes as humans connects us with our life support system. Our "spiritual response" is so needed now, as "the spirit of life on earth is in crisis." Jim's uplifting songs provide the balance to the wake up call, leaving participants with a vision and inspiration to take the healing into our own hands.

From his work with the Paul Winter Consort, where he was co-composer of their celebrated Missa Gaia/Earth Mass Jim has long been an activist for peace and the Earth with his music. Jim’s songs are in our UU Hymnbooks and he’s visited over 700 UU churches. Former Co-chair of the UU Ministry for the Earth, Jim helped create the "Green Sanctuary" program and his "Earth and Spirit Songbook," supported by a grant from the Fund for Unitarian Universalism, has been widely acclaimed by UU congregations.

"IN MEMORIUM"
In honor of Memorial Day and in acknowledging the sacrifices made by so many, we will explore how war has become ritualized. Not only in the acts, but also in the rationale for war and the fallacy of preventative or redemptive violence.

Rev. Gregory Cline, Interfaith Minister and Chaplain

Greg completed his Masters of Divinity from the Starr King School for the Ministry and the Chaplaincy Institute. Greg is a candidate for preliminary fellowship as a Unitarian Universalist minister and has been ordained as an Interfaith chaplain and minister by the Chaplaincy Institute. Greg has had the privilege of working as intern minister for both UUSCV and Throop UU. Greg is currently serving as a chaplain resident at the California Rehabilitation Center in Los Angeles.

"Honoring the Acjachemen People"

For roughly 13, 000 years before the arrival of the Spanish missionaries in 1776, the Native Acjachemen people lived and thrived in this region that we now call home As the original stewards of the land, their lives, families and traditions were profoundly disrupted by the imposition of the mission system. Their name was changed to Juaneno, to re-ect Mission San Juan Capistrano where they toiled.

Our program this Sunday will feature Adelia Sandoval, who is the spiritual overseer and cultural director off the Juaneno Band of Mission Indians. Rev Adelia Sandoval will speak of the lifestyle and beliefs of her people and how their strengths made then resilient in their determination to preserve their culture. Enjoy an opportunity to taste the acorn bread that was a staple of the Acjachemen diet. Please join us on Sunday, May 17.

For further information about the ancient beliefs of the Acjachemen, the Autry Museum has an online program about native culture. The program, Reclaiming El Camino, includes the Acjachemen origin story

"Broadway Musicals and Social Justice"

Musicals often reflect and social change. Please join us as Jeffrey Briar as he shares insights into West Side Story, South Pacific and Showboat.

Jeffrey Briar is no stranger to the UU Fellowship of Laguna Beach.
He first began visiting us in the 1970s, and since the 1990s he has been guest accompanist here on several occasions. In 1999-2000 he produced here in our Sanctuary a series entitled “New Millenium Concerts” where, as well as performing solo, he accompanied numerous other performing artists; and starting in 2006 he often occupied our Sunday School area - in the basement, underneath the stage – for training workshops in Laughter Yoga.
At our affiliated congregation of Tapestry, Jeffrey served as their Pianist for 12 years.
Jeffrey is in fact a Reverend, in the Universal Life Church; and in that capacity has officiated at several weddings.
As an advocate for Laughter Yoga, he brought Sanjay Gupta and CNN-TV to Laguna Beach for a documentary on “Happiness and Your Health.” He also appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and “Dancing with the Stars.”

San Onofre’s Nuclear Waste Problem

We can’t keep kicking the canisters down the road. Southern California Edison continues to claim “Low Risk” for the 3.6 million pounds of radioactive nuclear waste buried near an earthquake fault and a tsunami inundation zone in southern California, but there is good reason to worry about its safety. Imagine a scenario where spent nuclear fuel escapes from its sealed canisters at San Onofre and seeps into the sands lining the Pacific. In addition to the tremendous threat to human health and the environment, a spill would most likely shut down I-5 and the trains that run right next to the plant. A disaster at San Onofre would be widely felt, and its effects would remain with us for generations.

Thank you, to our speakers from Public Watchdogs, who keep pressure on SoCal Edison and the government to find a better way to take out the nuclear trash. Nina Babiarz and Charles Langley represent Public Watchdogs, a 501(c) non profit which investigates corruption and malfeasance in government and law enforcement. Join us on Sunday to hear more about the current plans for the nuclear waste stored in our backyard.

Charles Langley: A public advocate and energy analyst for over 20 years, has focused his work on energy issues that directly impact consumer rights, rates and information. Langley has worked tirelessly on behalf of the public’s
legitimate safety concerns since 2013 to expose alleged criminal activity, and fraud at the California Public Utilities Commission. He founded Public Watchdogs in 2016 and has since filed three Federal lawsuits; two of which went to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, another against the California State Lands Commission opposing it’s management of the Final Environmental Impact Report (FEIR) and a 2021 appeal filed with the U.S. Supreme Court; each case
specifically related to San Onofre’s unsafe conditions.
Additionally, he has filed petitions with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), requesting regulatory laws passed to protect the public’s safety, be enforced as originally intended. While Southern California Edison continues to claim “Low Risk” for the 3.6 million of pounds of radioactive nuclear waste buried near an earthquake fault and a tsunami inundation zone, Langley questions Edison’s logic for their need of insurance and emergency exemptions; both of which they applied for and got. Langley continues to pursue accountability that the tax-paying public
deserves. As Public Watchdogs Executive Director, Langley has not forgotten the millions of people currently burdened with 100% of Edison’s risk. His tenacious approach is seeking accountability for each.

Nina Babiarz
When the Three-Mile Island meltdown occurred in 1979, Nina was working as an engineering news reporter for McGraw-Hill in Pittsburgh. She experienced a nuclear evacuation first-hand and is here today to talk about that in relation to our situation at San Onofre. Promoted to Government Reporter, she learned how to track government spending, translate bureaucratic gibberish into plain English and secure accountability when warranted. Nina was transferred by McGraw-Hill to open a new office in Anaheim CA in 1984 to report the building boom in Southern California. She lived here in Laguna Beach from 1985 to 1992 and therefore knows what
treasure is at risk. She became engaged in the issue of radioactive nuclear waste over a decade ago when she discovered that a radiation leak at San Onofre could potentially shut down I-5, the LOSSAN rail corridor, make evacuation
dicey and result in unprecedented regional economic losses.
Please join us for this special service.

"The Trembling Edge of Possibility"

In a time when so much feels fractured, this service explores what becomes possible when we stay present to what is broken – not necessarily to restore it, but to open to new possibilities of coherence.

Stefanie Etzbach-Dale is a Unitarian Universalist Minister with 20 years of service to congregations in the Pacific Midwestern Region. She is zooming in from the unceded land of the Muwekwe Ohlone People in what is now Redwood City, CA. Affiliated with the UU Church of Palo Alto, she works as a Spiritual Director focusing on “building spiritual courage, resilience, and joy” through private spiritual direction sessions, group retreats and workshops, public speaking, art and volunteers as a chaplain at Stanford Hospital.
