Devotion: The Battle Belongs to the Lord
Teddy, a first time duck hunter, was hammering away in the twilight of morning as we sat in the bay. It was opening day and the flight was amazing. He was shooting and reloading almost constantly. In fact, Ted fired so much that he’d gone through two boxes of shells as I watched patiently.
I was there as his guide. My gun was loaded but sitting across one of the boat’s bench seats while I stood thigh deep in mud and water crouched next to one of the gunwales encouraging and instructing my friend on what to do next. After his fiftieth attempt Ted had decided to rest and he told me to go ahead and take over. Because I had been gauging speed on passing birds all morning and without pressure because this hunt was never about me to begin with; I picked up the gun and dropped first bird I saw on the first shot of the season. Actually, I dropped 4 birds on 5 shots in about a ten minute window. Because Teddy had allowed me to do what he believed I could when he could not; the skies were torn and the wing-ed fell. He got his rest. I did what he needed me to do and we both went home with birds to eat and stories to tell.
It was indeed the flesh made hands of David that threw the stone which would kill Goliath but David understood that the Lord would guide him arm. He was not “just at ease” in that moment but infuriated that anyone could even think they were able to stand against the Lord and his will for his people. David said to the giant before him “This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand and I will take your head from you,” though he himself bore no sword. Just moments later, using Goliath’s own sword he accomplished what he had promised!
When Israel was afraid to go into battle the Lord said go to the field and sing. Then as they rose their voices He fought for them; turning allied armies against each other as Israel’s voices carried a few tunes.
The walls of Jericho fell as the Israelites walked around them singing and giving shouts to the Lord.
The dreaded Saul was removed from his high horse and he became the Apostle Paul by and because of the Lord Jesus Christ himself.
Gideon’s Troops were whittled down to a mere three hundred before battle just to prove that it wasn’t their skill that would defeat over 10,000 and it was done because the Lord wanted them to know it was He that determined victory and not their numbers nor their ability.
Christian, take heart in these days and be at peace within your battles. For the Lord is with you. It may be your hands He guides or praise from your mouth that is used to orchestrate the victory but the battle always belongs to the Lord.
