Home Life Series #4
Parents and Their Progeny
Ephesians 6:1-4

Ephesians 6:1-4 (KJV)... 1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. 2 Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; 3 That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth. 4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord...

The Word of God is clear on this point; both the parent and their progeny have God-given roles and responsibilities they are to fulfill in their relationship to one another and to God… This morning, I want us to explore these truths together as we look at Parents and Their Progeny… The first thing we see in this passage is…
I. The Respect the Progeny Must Employ (vv.1-2)
1. The Priority of Respecting Our Parents (v.1)… Colossians 3:20
2. The Purpose of Respecting Our Parents (v.2)… Matthew 15:4a

II. The Reward the Progeny Can Expect (v.3)
1. The Promise of an Enriched Life (v.3a)… Romans 4:21; 1 Thessalonians 5:24; Hebrews 10:23
2. The Promise of an Extended Life (v.3b)…

III. The Role the Parent Should Embrace (v.4)
1. Parents Ought to Strive to Be Good Parents (v.4a)…
2. Parents Ought to Strive to Be Godly Parents (v.4b)…

CONCLUSION: Both parenting and childhood can be wonderful and enjoyable experiences if we follow God’s How to Live Manuel ~ The Bible… The greatest gift a parent can give to their child is a good and godly parent… Does your child know Jesus as their personal Savior? Do you?

Hall of Fame Dads
Psalm 128:1-4

Psalm 128:1-4… 1 Blessed is every one that feareth the LORD; that walketh in his ways. 2 For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands: happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee. 3 Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table. 4 Behold, that thus shall the man be blessed that feareth the LORD…

Kent Nerburn (Letters to My Son: Reflections on Becoming a Man)... No truer words have ever been spoken by man than these… It is much easier to become a father than to be one…

A Hall of Fame Dad is a Dad...
I. Who is Humble before the Lord (selected Verses)
1. He Subdues his Pride... Psalm 10:4; Proverbs 16:18...
2. He Surrenders his Person... Romans 12:1-2...
3. He Solidifies his Position... Exodus 20:3; Galatians 2:20; Joshua 24:15...

II. Who Is Holy unto the Lord (v.1)

b. He Behaves According to the Principles of God (v.1b)... Psalm 119:4; Psalm 119:27; Psalm 119:15…
2. The Hall of Fame Dad Presents an Uncompromising Life (v.1)…
a. He Continuously Talks the Talk (v.1a)… Deuteronomy 6:6-7; Psalm 19:14…
b. He Continuously Walks the Walk (v.1b)… Ephesians 5:15; Philippians 2:15…

III. Who is Honored by the Lord (vv.2-4)
1. He is blessed with the Work of His Hands (v.2a)…
2. He Is blessed with the Wealth of His Happiness (v.2b)…
3. He is blessed with the Warmth of His Home (v.3)…
4. He is blessed Because of the Worthiness of His Homage (v.4)…

CONCLUSION: There is a great need today for godly fathers. There always has been and always will be such a need. It has been said rightly said that a child is not likely to find a father in God unless he finds something of God in his father…
Men! In God’s eyes and our family’s eyes, let’s strive to be Home of Fame Dads…
A Question to Ponder this Father’s Day: Dad, if there were a Hall of Fame for Dads, would your child(ren) nominate you?

MOTHER’S DAY
Home Life Series #1

Eliminating the Fear Factor
Psalm 34:4,6,15,17,19,22

Psalm 34:1-10… 4 I sought the Lord, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears… 6 This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles… 15 The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry… 17 The righteous cry, and the Lord hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles… 19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the Lord delivers him out of them all… 22 The Lord redeems the soul of his servants: and none of them that trust in him shall be desolate…

Did you know the command to “fear not” or “do not be afraid” is the most repeated command in the entire Bible?

Four Truths that are Evident when Fear is a Factor...
(1) Our Thoughts will be Tortured... John 4:18
(2) Our Performance will be Pitiful... Mark 14:72
(3) Our Relationships will be Ruined... Genesis 3:10
(4) Our Potential will be Paralyzed... John 20:19

Three Steps to Eliminating the Fear Factor…
1. Re-Arrange Your Thoughts…
Proverbs 23:7; John 8:32; Isaiah 41:10; Psalm 23:4
2. Re-Affirm Your Faith…
Matthew 10:28; 2 Corinthians 5:7
3. Re-Align Your Life…
Isaiah 43:18-19; 2 Corinthians 5:17

CONCLUSION: Hebrews 12:1-2; Isaiah 26:3
Spiritual Principle: Fear is the opposite of faith and faith is the overcomer of fear...

The Demands of Discipleship

Luke 9:23

Luke 9:23… And he said to them all; f any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me…

Source Unknown… The Christian life is much more than just an insurance policy against hell. It is a way of life. It is a manner of living that demands total commitment…

The Demands of Discipleship can be summed up in the following statements… There can be No Rivals; No Refusals; No Retreat in relation to our relationship with Christ… Let’s look at each component of this statement individually, beginning with…

I. There Can Be No Rivals...

1. Our Desire For Relationships Must Not Rival Christ… Luke 14: 26

2. Our Desire For Riches Must Not Rival Christ… Luke 12:15; 1 Timothy. 6:9

3. Our Desire For Recognition Must Not Rival Christ… Colossians 1:18; Romans 12:3

II. There Can Be No Refusals...

1. We Must Die To The Principles Of The Old Life… Romans 6:6-7,11-12; Galatians 2:20

2. We Must Die To The Passions Of The Old Life… Romans 13:14; Galatians 5:24; Romans 6:14; 2 Corinthians 5:17

3. We Must Die To The Program Of The Old Life… 2 Corinthians 6:17; Galatians 6:14; 1 John 2:15

III. There Can Be No Retreat...

1. We Must Not Retreat, Despite The Cost… Luke 9:57-58

2. We Must Not Retreat, Despite The Controversy… Luke 9:59-60

3. We Must Not Retreat, Despite The Concern… Luke 9:61-62

CONCLUSION: Denis Waitley… Commitment is that turning point in your life when you seize the moment and convert it into an opportunity to alter your destiny…

Winning the Daily War
Psalm 18:33-35
Psalm 18:33-35… 33 He makes my feet like hinds’ feet, and sets me upon my high places. 34 He teaches my hands to war, so that the bow of steel is bent by mine arms. 35 Thou hast also given me the shield of Thy salvation; Thy right hand hath held me up, and Thy gentleness hath made me great…

Billy Graham... I am engaged in spiritual warfare every day. I must never let down my guard; I must keep armed...

In Winning the Daily War, the first thing I want to bring to your attention is:

I. The Daily Disciplines (Luke 9:23-25)
1. Winning the War Means Considering a Daily Decision (v.23a)…
2. Winning the War Means Considering a Daily Denial (v.23b)… 1 Corinthians 15:31; Psalm 61:8
3. Winning the War Means Considering a Daily Direction (vv 23c-25)… Matthew 16:26

II. The Durable Defenses (1 Timothy 1:18-19)
If you have made a decision to follow Jesus, then:
1. You Need To Discover Your Destiny… Jeremiah 29:11; Ephesians 2:10
2. You Need To Preset Your Priorities… Matthew 6:24; Matthew 6:33a; Ecclesiastes 3:1
3. You Need To Manage Your Motives… Proverbs 21:2; Proverbs 16:2; 1 Corinthians 10:31b
4. You Need To Cultivate Your Character… Matthew 7:17-18; James 3:10-12
5. You Need To Adjust Your Attitude... Philippians 2:3-5a,8b;Matthew 23:11

CONCLUSION: Revelation 12:11… And they overcame him [the enemy] by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death … Remember I told you that Paul said in 1 Corinthians 15:3… I die daily… Herein lies the key to his successful waging of the good fight… You can’t kill a dead man...

Sailing on Life’s Stormy Seas
Mark 4:35-41

Mark 4:35-41… 35 And the same day, when the even was come, he saith unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side. 36 And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships. 37 And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. 38 And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? 39 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith? 41 And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?

Just as Jesus produced the miracle on the sea, He has the power to calm your storm today. And believe me, we all must face our storm. We see this dramatically presented in our text today….

I want to draw your attention to three main points within our text today…

I. The Trip in the Ship (vv.35-36)
1. Our Life Has a Captain When Jesus is on Board (v.35-36)… Hebrews 2:10; Joshua 1:5; Matthew 28:20Isaiah 43:2
2. Our Life Has a Course When Jesus is On Board (v.35)… Jeremiah 29:11; Isaiah 30:21; John 15:5

II. The Travail in the Gale (v.37)
1. This Was a Sudden Storm (v.37)… 1 Peter 4:12; Proverbs 27:1
2. This Was a Severe Storm (v.37)… …
a. Even in the Severest of Storms, We Must Strive to Subdue Our Fears… Psalm 56:3-4; 2 Timothy 1:7
b. Even in the Severest of Storms, We Must Strive to Sustain Our Focus… Romans 8:28; Hebrews 12:1-2; 2 Corinthians 4:16-17

III. The Friend in the Wind (vv.38-40)
1. Jesus Responded to Their Fearfulness (v.38-39)… 2 Chronicles 15:2b; Jeremiah 29:12-14a
2. Jesus Reproved Them For Their Faithlessness (v.40)…
Mark 4:35… Mark 5:1a; Proverbs 17:3 Isaiah 48:10; Job 23:10; Psalms 66:10; 1 Peter 1:6-8

CONCLUSION: God says “Trust Me!!!” Do you trust Him? Do you know Him? My friend, are you ready to face the storm? You can be and will be if Jesus is in the ship? Do you have Him with you on the sea of life today?… Why not come to Him now?

The Past Behind Us – The Possibilities Before Us

Deuteronomy 2:1-3,13

Deuteronomy 2:1-3, 13… 1 Then we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea, as the Lord spake unto me: we compassed Mount Seir many days. 2 And the Lord spake unto me, saying, 3 Ye have compassed this mountain long enough: turn you northward...13 Now rise up, said I, and get ye over the Brook Zered). And we went over the Brook Zered...

Someone once said, we are all moving in the same direction – into the future… I believe this is true, but what future is it? The one living what can be or the one longing for what could have been? The past is behind us – the present is around us – the future is before us…

Preparation For The Future Requires That…

I. We Look Around (1 Corinthians 16:9a)..
1. We Must Look Around and Adjust Our Present Vision…
2. We Must Look Around and Assess Our Prospective Needs…
3. We Must Look Around and Accept Our Personal Challenges…

II. We Look Ahead (Philippians 3:13-14)...
1. We Must Look Ahead With Our Purpose In Mind…
2. We Must Look Ahead With Our Plan In Place…
3. We Must Look Ahead With Our People In Unison…

III. We Look Above (Romans 8:31: Philippians 4:13)...
1. We Must Look Above For The Wisdom To Direct Our Work…
2. We Must Look Above For The Will To Drive Our Work…
3. We Must Look Above For The Workers To Divide Our Work…

Conclusion: Together we can glow, go, and grow…

Arise, and let us go over the brook Zered…

The Failures Common in Faulty Churches
Acts 2:40-47

Acts 2:40-47 (KJV)… 40 And with many other words did (Peter) testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation. 41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. 42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. 43 And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles. 44 And all that believed were together, and had all things common; 45 And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need. 46 And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, 47 Praising God, and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved...

Francis Chan, Crazy Love: Overwhelmed by a Relentless God… Our greatest fear as individuals and as a church should not be of failure, but of succeeding at things in life that don’t really matter…

This morning, I want to point out to you what I perceive to be The Failures Common in Faulty Churches… Let’s begin by noting that number one…

The Faulty Church Has…
I. Inverted Its Priorities – They Have Lost Their Way
1. The Priority of Every Church is to Exalt the Kingship of God… Matthew 5:16; 1 Corinthians 10:31
2. The Priority of Every Church is to Expand the Kingdom of God… Matthew 28:19-20…
3. The Priority of Every Church is to Exhibit the Kindness of God… Luke 10:30-37…

II. Impaired Its Preaching – They Have Lost Their Word
1. They Are Reluctant to Preach About the Curse of the Sinner… 1 John 5:12; John 3:36; John 3:18; 2 Corinthians 5:11a
2. They Are Reluctant to Preach About the Cross of the Savior… Galatians 6:14; 1 Corinthians 2:2; Romans 1:16; John 14:6
3. They Are Reluctant to Preach About the Condition of the Saints… 2 Timothy 4:2; Titus 2:15; 1 Timothy 5:20… Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear… Titus 1:1

III. Impeded Its Power – They Have Lost Their Witness
1. They Are Slighting the Source of Their Power… Acts 1:8
2. They Are Neutralizing the Strength of Their Power… Zechariah 4:6b; John 15:5; Philippians 4:13
3. They Are Intentionally Suppressing Their Power… 2 Timothy 3:1,2,5,7

CONCLUSION: The basic underlying problem of the Faulty Church is that they cannot see their faults and fallacies… They do not perceive that they have Changed Their Priorities, Compromised Their Preaching or Constricted Their Power…

How to Observe Thanksgiving
Psalm 107:1-9

Psalm 107:1-9 (KJV)… 1 O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. 2 Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy; 3 And gathered them out of the lands, from the east, and from the west, from the north, and from the south. 4 They wandered in the wilderness in a solitary way; they found no city to dwell in. 5 Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them. 6 Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses. 7 And he led them forth by the right way, that they might go to a city of habitation. 8 Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! 9 For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness...

This morning I want to give you a few observations on How to Observe Thanksgiving…

I. We Should Observe Thanksgiving with Singing (Eph. 5:14-20)
1. Our Thanksgiving should be Marked by Spiritual Singing (v.19a)…
2. Our Thanksgiving should be Marked by Sincere Singing (v.19b)… Psalm 69:30

II. We Should Observe Thanksgiving with Supplication (Phil. 4:6-7)
1. Notice the Prominence of Thanksgiving (v.6a)…
2. Notice the Prayer of Thanksgiving (v.6b)…
3. Notice the Pursuit in Thanksgiving (v.6c)…
4. Notice the Peace of Thanksgiving (v7)… Philippians 4:11-13

III. We Should Observe Thanksgiving with Sacrifices (Psa. 107:21-22)
1. The Sacrifices of Thanksgiving Includes Our Bodies… Romans 12:1
2. The Sacrifices of Thanksgiving Includes Our Belongings… Deuteronomy 26:3,10
3. The Sacrifices of Thanksgiving Includes Our Behavior… 1 Corinthians 6:20; 7:23

CONCLUSION: Thanksgiving is not just a day in November; it is a way of life...

The person who truly gives thanks is the person who is truly thankful for the manifold blessings of God in their life…

The Prodigal Son Series #3
The Prodigal’s Brother
(The Prodigal that Never Left)
Luke 15:25-32

Luke 15:25-32 (KJV)... 25 Now his elder son was in the field: and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard musick and dancing. 26 And he called one of the servants, and asked what these things meant. 27 And he said unto him, Thy brother is come; and thy father hath killed the fatted calf, because he hath received him safe and sound. 28 And he was angry, and would not go in: therefore came his father out, and intreated him. 29 And he answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends: 30 But as soon as this thy son was come, which hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf.31 And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine. 32 It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found...

This morning I want to focus on The Elder Brother, The Prodigal that Never Left. Through his life Jesus illustrates a great truth that He wants to convey to the Pharisees and the Scribes. Remember, their attitude toward the lost was the purpose for Jesus giving these parables, (Luke 15:1-2)... 1 Then drew near unto him all the publicans and sinners for to hear him. 2 And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receives sinners, and eats with them...

I. The Introduction of the Brother (vv.25,29a)
1. His Lineage (v.25a)...
2. His Labor (v.25b)...
3. His Loyalty (v.29a)...

II. The Infuriation of the Brother (vv.25b-30)
1. He was Bitter (25b-28)...
2. He was Brazen (28b)...
3. He was Belligerent (vv.29-30)...

III. The Intercession of the Father (vv.28c,31-32)
1. He Sought to Implore Commiseration (v.28c)...
2. He Sought to Impart Confidence (v.31)...
3. He Sought to Inspire Compliance (v.32)...

Conclusion... The older son and the younger son—before he returns home—have the exact same problem: The younger son says, “I don’t deserve this, therefore I need to work hard to earn it.” The older son says, “I’ve worked hard to earn it, therefore I deserve it.” Either way, they believed that their father’s loved was conditional: it depended on what they did... This parable says—emphatically says “NO!” It’s all about the father’s grace...
