📖 THE LORD’S PRAYER: A PATTERN FOR PRAYER

When the disciples asked Jesus, “Lord, teach us to pray,” they were not asking for a prayer to memorize. They had watched Him pray. They had witnessed His power, His compassion, His authority, and His relationship with the Father. They saw something in Him that they longed for in their own lives.

Jesus answered by saying, “After this manner therefore pray ye…” (Matthew 6:9).

He wasn’t simply giving them words to repeat. He was giving them a pattern for prayer. He was showing them how to approach God—with worship, faith, humility, repentance, dependence, and trust.

This prayer reveals what matters to God and what should matter to us. It begins with worship, moves into surrender, teaches us dependence upon Him, reminds us of the importance of forgiveness, seeks His protection, and ends by giving Him all the glory.

Let’s walk through it together.

📖 “Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.”

Prayer begins with worship.

Before we bring our requests, we recognize who He is. He is our Father, our Creator, our Savior, and our King. His name is holy, exalted, and worthy of all praise.

He is Jehovah Jireh, our Provider.
He is Jehovah Nissi, our Banner and Victory.
He is Jehovah Shalom, our Peace.
He is Jehovah Rapha, our Healer.

He is the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last. He was God before the world began, and He will still be God when time is no more. There is none beside Him, none above Him, and none that can compare to Him.

Prayer should never begin with our problems. It should begin with His greatness. We magnify Him, honor Him, and give Him the glory He deserves.

📖 “Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.”

Prayer continues with surrender.

This is where we lay down our plans, our desires, and our ambitions and submit ourselves to His purpose. We ask Him to order our steps, direct our decisions, open the right doors, and close the wrong ones.

Too often we ask God to bless what we want to do. Jesus teaches us to seek what God wants to do. We are saying, “Lord, let Your kingdom be established in my life. Let Your purpose be fulfilled in me. Not my will, but Thine be done.”

A life surrendered to God is a life positioned to receive His direction.

📖 “Give us this day our daily bread.”

Prayer acknowledges our dependence upon Him.

Every good thing we have comes from His hand.

He provides the food on our table, the strength in our body, the peace in our mind, and the breath in our lungs. He is our Provider, our Protector, and our Sustainer.

Just as He faithfully provided manna for Israel in the wilderness, He remains faithful to provide for His people today. Day after day, season after season, He proves Himself trustworthy.

📖 “And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.”

Prayer requires repentance and forgiveness.

None of us are saved by our own goodness. We all need His mercy. We come before Him asking Him to forgive our failures, our shortcomings, and our sins.

But Jesus also teaches that those who have received mercy should be willing to extend mercy.

We cannot hold on to bitterness while asking for grace. We are called to forgive those who have hurt us, pray for those who have wronged us, and trust God to handle what we cannot.

A forgiven heart should be a forgiving heart.

📖 “And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”

Prayer seeks His protection.

We live in a world filled with temptation, distractions, deception, and spiritual battles.

Jesus teaches us to pray for guidance and protection. We ask Him to lead us away from anything that would pull us away from Him. We ask Him to place spiritual blinders on us toward the things of this world that would damage our walk with God.

We ask Him to guard our minds, protect our families, strengthen our churches, and preserve our testimony. We ask Him to keep us sensitive to His voice and steadfast in His truth.

We need His guidance every single day.

📖 “For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.”

Prayer ends where it began—with worship.

The kingdom belongs to Him.
The power belongs to Him.
The glory belongs to Him.

Every blessing, every victory, every miracle, and every answered prayer points back to Him.

Our lives are not about building our kingdom. They are about advancing His Kingdom and bringing glory to His name.

⭐ In Summary

The Lord’s Prayer is not merely a prayer to recite—it is a blueprint for a life of prayer.

Worship Him.
Surrender to Him.
Depend on Him.
Repent before Him.
Forgive others.
Seek His protection.
Give Him the glory.

Jesus wasn’t just teaching His disciples what to say. He was teaching them how to approach God—with reverence, faith, humility, and complete trust.

“After this manner therefore pray ye…”
— Matthew 6:9 (KJV)

This Memorial Day weekend, as families unite around grills, lakes, and dinner tables, let us not forget the families who are quietly holding on to memories instead of making new moments. Some will gaze at an old photograph today and yearn to hear that voice just one more time. Some will clasp folded flags close to their hearts, where a husband, wife, son, daughter, father, or mother once stood.

Freedom is a precious gift, but it has always come at a great cost. Every church service we attend freely, every prayer lifted without fear, every child laughing in peace, is a testament to the sacrifices made by those who loved this country enough to lay down everything for it.

There are names etched on monuments, but there are also names written softly in the hearts of mothers who still ache, children who still remember, and families who still miss someone every single day. This weekend, we honor more than soldiers. We honor sacrifice. We honor courage. We honor love.

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”— John 15:13 (KJV)

And today, may we never rush past the cost of the freedoms we enjoy so easily. May God bless the families of the fallen. May God bless America. And may we never forget those who gave everything so we could live free.
