Friends, in today’s Gospel (Matthew 9:36—10:8), Jesus summons apostles whom he shapes and sends on mission.

Priests through the centuries—from Augustine and Aquinas, to Francis Xavier and John Henry Newman, to John Paul II—are the descendants of those first friends and apprentices of the Lord. They have been needed in every age, and they are needed today, for the kingdom of heaven must be proclaimed, the poor must be served, God must be worshipped, and the sacraments must be administered.

Spiritual fathers are required especially in our time, when a rising tide of secularism threatens to overwhelm the religious impulse. We are wired for God; we will never satisfy the deepest longing of our hearts apart from God.

The secularist ideology teaches that sufficient amounts of wealth, pleasure, power, or honor will make us happy. Who will counter this? Who will speak to this culture of the beauty of God? Who will remind us that our lives are not about us? Who will break open the words of the Gospel and spread out the banquet table of Christ’s body and blood? This is why we need priests.

Friends, on this Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time, the Gospel is about Jesus sending the Twelve on a mission. Whenever we hear about the Twelve, it’s the Church in seminal form. And here’s what I want to focus on: Whom does Jesus call to be his apostles? Not the best and brightest people of his time but fairly ordinary and even compromised characters. Yet Jesus sees something in every one of them—some gift, virtue, or capacity needed in the life of the Church: https://youtu.be/pmwzhbuSVkE

The first Catholic Doggie Play Date took place on Saturday, June 13, in the lovely fenced-in area behind the St. Ann Memorial Center. Catholic Doggie Play will take place every Saturday morning (weather permitting) from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM.
This is a great opportunity for your dog (s) to enjoy romping with other dogs and for Catholic dog owners to meet other Catholic dog owners.

Prayer to St. Anthony of Padua
Tuesday Devotion

O glorious St. Anthony,
gentle helper and powerful intercessor,
you who are known as the saint of miracles
and the finder of what is lost,
turn your loving gaze upon me.

Obtain for me clarity in confusion,
hope in times of distress,
and peace in moments of anxiety.
Help me to find what I have lost—
in faith, in life, and in love.

Teach me to trust more deeply in God’s providence,
to walk in humility,
and to serve others with charity.

St. Anthony, faithful friend of the poor and the troubled,
pray for me and for those I love,
that we may always seek God above all things
and remain faithful to His will.

Amen. 🙏

He (Jesus) said to the disciple: Behold thy mother. - John 19

Let us behold what sort of a woman Christ gave us in His mother, the mother of all faithful Christians. Our perfect model, she stands as the very antithesis Eve.

In June, we focus on the Sacred Heart of Jesus. A beautiful way to honor this devotion is through prayers of reparation. In our Catholic tradition, prayers of reparation are intentional acts of prayer we offer to God to make amends for the spiritual damage caused by sin. Whether we're reflecting on our own mistakes or praying for the offenses of others, these prayers are a tangible way to seek spiritual healing and peace.

One of our most well-known prayers of reparation is the Divine Praises, recited after Benediction during Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and before the Holy Eucharist is returned to the tabernacle. It was originally composed in 1797 by Fr. Luigi Felici, in response to an increase in public blasphemy, sacrilege, and profane language that was occurring at the time. It remains a timely and powerful prayer of reparation today.

Blessed be God.
Blessed be his holy Name.
Blessed be Jesus Christ, true God and true man.
Blessed be the Name of Jesus.
Blessed be his most Sacred Heart.
Blessed be his most Precious Blood.
Blessed be Jesus in the most holy Sacrament of the altar.
Blessed be the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete.
Blessed be the great Mother of God, Mary most holy.
Blessed be her holy and Immaculate Conception.
Blessed be her glorious Assumption.
Blessed be the name of Mary, Virgin and Mother.
Blessed be Saint Joseph, her most chaste Spouse.
Blessed be God in his Angels and in his Saints.
Amen.

“Henri’s life was and will continue to be impactful and invitational, not in spite of his struggles, but because of them. He loved people well, he gave all that he had to others, he taught and wrote and lived in such a way that pointed towards God and interconnectedness and care. He was also profoundly lonely, depressed, and could be difficult.” This is a quote from the podcast Radical Sacred. And yet, Henri’s books and life continue to bring hope, healing and enlightenment to those who encounter him in his writings.
