Sharing these moving and important words of Reverend Ali K.C. Bell, our incoming minister. As UUs, and as BVUUF, we will not stand by and allow the erasure and targeting of our faith and our trans loved ones. It is one of our core beliefs that all lives have inherent worth and dignity, and that we are stronger because of the rich diversity of our communities.

The Defense Department has announced a significant reduction in the number of religious affiliations it officially recognizes.

06/05/2026

We send our unwavering support for Unitarian Universalists (UU) in uniform and our UU military chaplains. We recently learned the Department of Defense (DOD) has removed 180 separate religious affiliations from the US military’s list of religious affiliation codes. This eliminates the code for Unitarian Universalists, as well as Humanists, Atheists and Pagan traditions, and many others. Along with dozens of other religious traditions, UUs will be categorized broadly under “Other” in military’s religious affiliation codes.

Please note this decision does not directly impact the status of our UU military chaplains, who are authorized through a separate faith-based endorsement process with the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA). What it does mean is that Unitarian Universalist service members will not be able to select their specific religious identity in their personnel records. This may make it more difficult for our uniformed UUs to access the spiritual care that they need.

At this time, we are diligently working with our UUA counsel and partners in a variety of faith traditions to craft a strategic response that faithfully represents our values and demonstrates clear support for our UU service members and their families, as well as all those who are impacted by this DOD policy.

We will share more information when it is available. But today, we declare that no government action can erase our faith nor lessen the powerful and necessary grounding it provides for those who serve.

UUs are very good at holding complexity.

We can affirm many ways to move through the world, connect to the sacred, or sing a beloved hymn… and still hold firm to the precise dishwasher loading diagram everyone should follow when using the congregation’s kitchen. 😄

That’s the beauty of our shared UU community life: we may not have perfect agreement, but we can be our best imperfect selves practicing how to live together with care, intention, and respect for one another.

BVUUF had the honor of hosting Crys Matthews on May 1 for an invigorating and memorable evening of music and love. Here is a taste of what we got to experience before she headed down the road. Now, she’s home in Tennessee, fighting the good fight for voting rights. We are grateful to have such a force on our side.

May 8th at 5:30: The Call for Joy and Resilience - with Rev. Ruth Rinehart
LUUP Campus, Longmont UCC Church, 1500 9th Ave, Longmont

After Rev. Ruth Rinehart answered a call for clergy to show up in Minneapolis in late January, after she was in that city when Alex Pretti was murdered, she has come back to our state to galvanize Colorado Unitarian Universalists into a more cohesive Rapid Response and Action Network. You know these times call for action. You know that Colorado Unitarian Universalists want to be more organized. Join us for dinner and witness and the call for joy and resilience and sustainability as we meet this moment.

Rev. Ruth Rinehart is a UU Community Minister in Golden, affiliated with Common Flame Unitarian Universalist Congregation (formerly known as Jefferson Unitarian Church). Her passion for social justice comes through both in her Ministry, and in her actions. She is the founder of the “first-in-the-country” q***r recovery residence, that welcomes all genders – Just Living Recovery in Lakewood, Colorado. Currently, she is working towards the emergence of a Colorado UU State Action Network, so Unitarian Universalist in Colorado are able to organize together.

What to Expect from a LUUP Gathering

The LUUP community gathers each 2nd and 4th Friday. Check with the listing for each Friday for specifics, as we experiment with our format. This month, we will be seated in the dining area with the service interspersed with the meal, engaging all ages throughout the meal.

Join us for the meal or drop by and pick up a supper whether you are attending our service or not. We try to offer dietary options including vegan and gluten free, but if you have special needs you may wish to bring your own. We invite you to bring a take home container to enjoy some leftovers. There is no charge.

These evenings are intergenerational, and our family host welcomes children with table activities and a play space. To be welcoming to persons with vulnerable health, we encourage mask wearing. Supper will be unmasked so plan according to your needs. Please dress comfortably, the space is accessible for mobility, and has an all-gender restroom.

Are you willing and able to help set-up, greet attendees, and serve the meal? Please contact [email protected]

Today, the Unitarian Universalist Association calls for an end to the war in Iran in a letter to President Trump and other U.S. leaders.

The letter names this military action as a violation of our deepest commitments and warns that it threatens religious liberty. It also makes clear that this “illegal and destructive use of military force cannot be justified on the grounds of human rights,” and puts Iranian people at further risk of harm.

Grounded in a generations-long witness for religious pluralism, the UUA affirms that many people of faith oppose imperialist aims masquerading as religious commitments.

UU leaders are also inviting you to join them by adding your name to the public letter.

April 10th at 5:30: Embracing the Possibility of a New World - with Jen Friedman of Dances of Universalist Peace, on Longmont Unitarian Universalist Presence (LUUP) dinner church.

“Another world is not only possible, she is on her way. On a quiet day, I can hear her breathing.”

Arundhati Roy’s assessment invites us to embrace the possibility of a world transformed by mutuality, creativity, radical love and peace.

Most of us are aware that we stand on the verge of our collective becoming but we know not yet what it is that we shall become. It is here in the threshold time that we daily encounter the work of “both/and.”

Even as we engage the hard and messy work that justice requires, we have a chance to bring gratitude, mindfulness and kindness to every interaction. This time offers us the opportunity to cultivate the habit of awareness and fall in love with every moment.

During times of great uncertainty, our daily environments take on extra-ordinary roles. Our spiritual communities, neighbors, and even the exchange with the grocery store clerk become important touchstones for stability, well-being and meaning making in our lives.

Let us gather in song, in dance, in creative conversation as we breathe the new world into existence together.

Once a touring singer/songwriter with two original folk albums, Jennifer Friedman is a beloved Leader and Mentor in the Dances of Universal Peace tradition. With a down-to-earth, warm and welcoming style, she has led the Longmont and Lafayette, CO DUP Circles for 15 years and leads Dances and sacred singing at retreats and festivals throughout North America, Mexico and South America. Jennifer received a Master of Divinity from The Iliff School of Theology and traveled the country for 7 years presenting musical church service programs which incorporated the Dances for UU and Unity Churches. She serves as Executive Director for DUP North America and is a part-time interfaith hospital chaplain at 2 Northern CO hospitals. Jennifer has been personally transformed by the Dances and the direct transmission of Source energy and wisdom that they offer while simultaneously fostering a communal sense of the peace that is possible in these needed times. “Start building these connections now.”

That guidance, shared by Lena Gardner, a Minneapolis resident and Executive Director of Black Lives of Unitarian Universalism, is one of the clearest lessons coming out of this moment. When communities are connected—when neighbors know one another, share resources, and build relationships—people are safer. And repression becomes harder.

What’s happening in Minneapolis is a reminder that this work doesn’t begin when a crisis arrives. It begins now, in everyday acts of mutual care and solidarity.
