Diocese of Lafayette in Indiana

Diocese of Lafayette in Indiana We are the People of God uniting in the heart of Jesus Christ. Pope Pius XII established the Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana on October 21, 1944.

We join the whole Church in proclaiming the Gospel in word, sacrament, and charity for the salvation of all people. The Diocese of Fort Wayne, the Mother Diocese, was established in 1857. Then, the territory now occupied by the Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana had only three small brick churches with resident pastors, and four frame missions. Total Catholic population was about 5,000 people. Missio

naries were still active in the area. On November 11, 1944, the Holy See made the announcement regarding the partitioning of the Fort Wayne Diocese creating the Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana. The name was expressed in that manner to distinguish it from the Diocese of Lafayette, Louisiana. The new diocese had 54 parishes and a Catholic population of 31,700. The area designated had 9,832 square miles and comprised 24 counties in northcentral Indiana extending from the Illinois to the Ohio state lines. Catholics comprised fewer than 6 percent of the total population. The area was largely rural.

"Humanity, created by God in all its grandeur, is today facing a pivotal choice: either to construct a new Tower of Babel or to build the city in which God and humanity dwell together."

On May 25, Pope Leo XIV signed his first encyclical, "Magnifica Humanitas" ("Magnificent Humanity") - exactly 135 years after the promulgation of Pope Leo XIII's "Rerum novarum." In this work, the Holy Father outlines the potential future for humanity in the era of artificial intelligence.

This spring, volunteers from six parishes across Lafayette came together to embark on the 11th Catholic House Build with Habitat for Humanity - construction is scheduled to be completed by July.

For those who join in, part of the joy comes from putting the Catholic faith into action with people across the diocese.

"You could be working next to someone from St. Lawrence or Blessed Sacrament. You might know them, you might not. But at the end of the day, you've done something together," one volunteer said.

Pope Leo XIV’s first encyclical, "Magnifica Humanitas," will be published May 25, addressing artificial intelligence and the protection of human dignity, the Vatican has announced.

The encyclical, the title of which is Latin for "Magnificent Humanity," was signed by the pope on May 15, the 135th anniversary of "Rerum Novarum," Pope Leo XIII's foundational 1891 social encyclical on labor and capital written during the first Industrial Revolution.

In an unprecedented first, Pope Leo XIV will be present in person at the Vatican press conference to mark the publication of the social encyclical, along with Christopher Olah, co-founder of the artificial intelligence company Anthropic, which developed the AI large language model (LLM) named Claude.
