As Father's Day approaches, we remember Father Nelson Baker. During his 60 years of priesthood, Father Baker touched the lives of tens of thousands of people. He is affectionally remembered for his dedication to the "Baker Boys", the orphans and those who came to him in need. In doing so, Father Baker became a father figure and is often referred to as "Father of the Fatherless."

As Mother's Day approaches, it is an opportunity to reflect on the special women in our lives.

We would like to share the story of someone who had a profound influence on Father Baker’s life; Caroline (Donnellan) Baker. From Nelson Baker’s early childhood into early adulthood, she was a role model and teacher through her devout faith in God.

When Nelson was in the seminary, his life would be even more profoundly influenced by his spiritual Mother when he visited Notre Dame des Victories Church in Paris.

Throughout Father Baker's life - every accomplishment, new building, or penny that showed up unexpectedly in support of his mission - were all credited to her diving goodness: "She did it all!" was his exclamation whenever anyone sought to credit the humble priest.

The date of April 8, 1916 may not seem significant to many people but for Fr. Nelson Baker, this date became a catalyst for his dreams. You see, on this date there was a fire in the belfry of St. Patrick's Church. No one was injured but this caused one of the steeples to collapse.

It became obvious that repairs were needed but Father Baker restored only the areas needed for worship. At a parish meeting held shortly after the fire, Father Baker announced his plans to build a magnificent church for his patroness, Our Lady of Victory.

In less than 1 week, we will celebrate the remarkable life of Father Nelson Baker. On February 16, 1842, Nelson Henry Baker was born to Louis and Caroline Baker, the second of four sons. His humble beginnings transformed into a remarkable life, spanning 94 years.

As we begin 2022, we enter the 2nd year of celebration of the OLV Basilica’s centennial.

In January of 2011, the Vatican bestowed on Father Baker the title of "Venerable Nelson Baker." We continue to pray for his canonization and follow Father Baker's Legacy of "compassion for the poor, justice for the oppressed, hope for the troubled and courage to those in doubt."

On October 7th, we will celebrate the Feast Day of Our Lady of Victory. Mary was a constant source of inspiration not only in Father Baker’s personal life but also in his ministry of service to others. Knowing he could not do it alone, he prayed to Our Lady and she never failed him.

When given praise for all that he accomplish, Father Baker modestly replied:

"She did it all"

referring to his patroness, Our Lady of Victory. 100 years ago, Father Nelson Baker placed the OLV National Shrine & Basilica cornerstone and honored his promise to devote his life to Our Lady of Victory.

As a seminarian, Nelson Baker, as part of a pilgrimage in Paris, visited Notre Dame des Victoires, knelt at the communion rail and whispered:

“From now on I shall devote my entire life to your service. I shall devote all my thoughts and actions to your name. I will spread the devotion of Our Lady of Victory throughout America.”

As we know, Father Baker honored his promise to the Blessed Mother and initiated the construction of one of the most splendid architectural wonders ever created, OLV National Shrine & Basilica.
